Status of communityblock

By chrizZo·
It's a long time since our communityblock project came up here at XJ. A lot of people within the community, especially the mappers, were waiting for the release of the final version. I met radon to ask him about the status of the project and I've summed up what he was saying.

08/10/2009 00:44:00

too bad :(

08/10/2009 01:15:00

I seriously can't understand why the mapcheck team didn't decide to release it like it was. There is a working and good version out there! Whe could jus use this version, I really don't see a problem with it. Better than nothing...

08/10/2009 01:26:00

Chrizzo, exactly..

08/10/2009 01:52:00

08/10/2009 06:29:00

If i someone teach me how to fix the map - i will help the project

08/10/2009 07:26:00

Feel free to play the old version of communityblock released, which Supa dropped a link to. But look how we (the mapchecking team!) are denying one map after another, 'cause we are missing diversity in it. Not many (kz) mappers today are capable of making a longer map that doesn't get boring, it is a talent to create something like that. Now, wouldn't it be kind of weird if XJ themselves released an official map like the old, long, sad communityblock we saw released a long time ago. We probably wouldn't accept ourselves if it got submitted. If we would, we would probably only do that 'cause of the unique concept. Still, that doesn't change the fact that the map is really boring to climb, and extremely long. And also, there was used a compiling parameter called -cliptype in it (it was necessary for the map to compile) which usually adds a little invisible wall on all sides of the walls, which in my opinion, makes the map really annoying to climb. Repetitive environment and annoying walls are just some of the criteria for a map as large as this. Something tells me that the people who started this project didn't know enough about mapping to be able to judge a maximum size of the map, if it also had to be a good looking map, with a lot of diversity, so the jumper doesn't get bored. Almost every mapper who submitted a block putted an extreme load of jumps into it. The blocks were already very large (512x512x512) and about 50 of those is really something like the maximum of what the HL engine can handle, at least that's what we found out. Furthermore, as radon said, it's extremely boring to work with this map, you need a lot of spare time and a lot of patience, and I think that not just everyone knows how difficult it is to make such a large map work out. So yeah, I would say the hope for a new communityblock is pretty much lost.

08/10/2009 07:57:00

sad :(

08/10/2009 09:16:00

Never back down )

08/10/2009 11:34:00

Heh, question is- is this really worth all that work? How many good maps mapmeikers could create themselves while they`re forced to manage this project?

08/10/2009 12:32:00

damn :(

08/10/2009 12:42:00

Just release first version...

08/10/2009 13:39:00

08/10/2009 14:22:00

omg its alive :o

08/10/2009 14:53:00

no vodka, its not

08/10/2009 15:12:00

I still liked radon's version very much, as well as puppetz version. 5 times better than the other releases. Can't understand why you guys can't motivate to finish them :( http://home.arcor.de/thafak0r/maps.zip (layout 2 by radon, layout 3 by puppetz). Feel free to try them, and maybe post some cheering words to radon. I'm sure the map would be loved by the ppl out there, no matter if the design is what you wanted it to have radon.... simply the fact that the balancing was fixed, makes the map 3 times better than the other one. Think about it! Please!

08/10/2009 15:28:00

radon's version is excellent although it reminds of kzdk_megablock...probably cuz of the textures. puppetz version is brighter and has it's appeal... would like to play radon's version

08/10/2009 16:14:00

Sad to see communityblock will most likely never be created like it was dreamed to be. Though it's understandable why anyone would quit on this project. PS. Good thing that I never had problems playing through this map so ha-ha ;)

08/10/2009 17:49:00

http://archive.perfectduluthday.com/beating-a-dead-horse.gif yes im right

08/10/2009 18:22:00

radon's version a bit better but continue it!

08/10/2009 20:35:00

one of the few times i watched someone kz (not bhop) was watching brian nocheck community block. surprisingly enough, i didn't really get bored watching it either although it was 60+ min of speccing (i missed some in the start) its kind of a shame it will get laid to rest, but i can imagine all the work it takes to refine it.

08/10/2009 21:38:00

Hmm, Chrizzo, I think this is more a "Weekly" news.. Think you are coming up with so many small news atm. - GJ anyways, sad news

08/10/2009 21:39:00

PS: Omg, just read the article about more news, because of changes about "Weekly" here on XJ.. My bad XD

09/10/2009 11:36:00

imo, radon's slightly better.. but then people's opinion will differ and all. this will surely gonna be one of xj's greatest stuff if and when the map gets done, though i can estimate the immense amount of hard work you guys are prolly putting into it. so don't step back now.. and plz finish the project. and always remember... "Many of the great achievements of the world were accomplished by tired and discouraged men who kept on working." all the best :)

09/10/2009 12:08:00

+1 faker. Jeg håber du klare den radon! Det er XJ's største mapping projekt nogensinde.
