New mapcheck system released

By faker mapper·

Hey guys,

if you don't remember, the old mapcheck system ceased to exist (announced in this news) and we had a big community vote about the possible alternatives.
Now it's finally time to present the new mapcheck system (created due to the idea that won in that vote).

Bascially you can read everything (reasons for the change, ideas behind the system, concrete operations and rules) at the mapsubmission page, however I'm going to try to give you a short overview in this newspost and try to make sure everyone (especially the mappers) understand what the new mapcheck system is all about.
If you have any questions about it please don't hesitate to ask in the comments!

Okay, here we go:

Custom maps:

The probably biggest change is the new system and policy for custom maps. A big problem regarding custom maps was that everyone had a different idea about what a custom map is about (even our mapadmins) also the differences to the normal kz_ maps became more and more blurred. As a consequence there was a lot of controversy about lately accepted kz_ maps, because some of the custom maps had even a better quality than the kz_ maps - and then again some of the custom maps were pretty unpopular, whereas other popular maps didn't get accepted at all.
To work against these major problems XJ won't be releasing custom maps anylonger.

Mappers should feel free to release their custom maps wherever they want, XJ offers a maprelease forum as a lobby/central place for that releases to happen, though. After the maps are posted by the mappers it's on you, the community, to play the maps and determine which of the maps have enough quality and great jumps and therefore would be a good map for the record section.

Such popular maps (or older popular maps that weren't submitted to XJ yet) can be nominated in the map nominations forum (worked pretty well with the kz_synergy_x petition as well) and once there are enough reasonable (!) votes (by people that agree, by posting an answer and explanation to the thread) the XJ mapteam will take a short look on the map to see if there are any outstanding problems and if everything is fine with the map, it will be added to the XJ mapcycle.

Kz_ maps:

Kz_ maps still have to go under the old quality check and will be released by XJ in official map releases. However, this is where the main idea behind the option that won the community-vote is going to be involed; in a forum called the public beta-testing area.
Mappers who want their maps tested for bugs, shortcuts, missing files (models, sprites) or other issues can post their map into the public-betacheck forum.

This is the place were you guys, the community, can and should test the upcoming maps as good as possible: post a honest (but not offending) opinion about the quality of the maps and, if you want, try to help the mappers with finding bugs, shortcuts and other problems in the map.

Once a map went through this forum and is free of bugs (or the mapper thinks it's been there long enough) it goes to the XJ mapadmins who are going to check the map for its quality and whether it deserves the kz_ tag or not. When doing that, they will have a look at the opinions posted in the public-betacheck forum as well, therfore everyone of you is going to have an indirect way to "vote" on the kz_ maps as well by posting his or her opinion in that forum.

The most active helpers and testers from the forum will get a chance to work as XJ mapadmin in the future, if they do a great job and prove their knowledge and objectivity.

If mappers do NOT want to put their map into the usual process for any reason, they have a chance to skip the whole public-beta test process and submit their map directly to the XJ map admins. This, of course, should be the exception, and when people use this "wildcard" they should make sure that they had their map tested properly by persons they trust, since XJ admins are only going to judge the quality - and not helping to (beta-)test the map. To ensure that this is really happening, re-submissions for maps submitted this way will only be possible under very rare circumstances (decided at admins discretion).

Looks pretty promising.

Very good idea!

NICE :)

20/06/2010 19:30:00

hope it's gonna work

20/06/2010 19:52:00

imo when the maps are denied some ppl are too lazy to fix those bug and they will submit it to cosy instead sumbit it to XJ.....

20/06/2010 19:55:00

good deal, i was looking forward to see wut the new system looks like, cant say i agree with not accepting custom maps any longer.

20/06/2010 20:06:00

I agree with pLaguEE

20/06/2010 20:16:00

Nice

20/06/2010 20:25:00

This kind of sucks... I think probably people will look for bugs / shortcuts in the beginning ( is something new and the want to see what is all about ), but afterwords it will get boring and people will just get the map to see how it is and will not give a shit about finding bugs or shortcuts (it may happen that if someone will find a big sc, he will not tell the mapper about it just so he can make a wr on the map when is done) Well i hope i am wrong...

20/06/2010 20:33:00

Good news, guys! I'm really glad to see positive progress in our system. ^^

20/06/2010 20:38:00

Map nominations is a good idea... I think many custom maps are very good and must be official )

20/06/2010 20:47:00

very good looks promising but it`s stupid not to accept costum maps

20/06/2010 20:54:00

I have got confused =)

20/06/2010 21:06:00

I think it seems like a good system. I think the confusing part comes with old "none-kz-tag-maps" that have records. Will they be renamed or what?

20/06/2010 21:11:00

too long, didn't read

20/06/2010 21:16:00

then don't comment misiun

20/06/2010 21:28:00

simpler: It will have no effect on the old maps, don't worry.

20/06/2010 22:26:00

well done

20/06/2010 23:41:00

good luck mappers!

21/06/2010 00:04:00

Psyxopat : We will still ACCEPT custom maps, but through a different method. The community will have to nominate what maps they would like to see as custom maps. And mappers can still make custom maps, but their custom maps, need to be played first by the community and after that nominated. And if there will be a clear yes from the community, the custom map will be released as an official XJ map, a map that can have official wrs. on it. MAM6A : There are 3 things you need to understand : 1) Via submitmaps.php will be submited only kz taged maps. For this, the mappers have to possibilities : a)To submit their kz tag map for public check first, where the whole community can play and check their maps (and after the public checks them, the map will have a final check by the XJ map admins) or b)The mappers don't want their map to be tested by the public, so they have the possibility to send their map directly to XJ map admins. But in this case, the mapper needs to understand that before sending it directly to XJ map admins, he must check his map (alone or with some friends) to fix all the bugs, shortcuts and so on, because our map admin squad is only checking the maps for quality. For this situation, in case of a lot of bugs that are not fixed before sending the map to our official map admin team, the mapper might not have the chance to resubmit his map again. The resubmission in this is case is at our discretion. As for the custom maps, as I explained to Psyxopat, those maps will be posted directly in forum, the community will play them, and if they like it, they can nominate it. After they nominate it, if there are enough signs from the community that they would like to play the map, then the map will be accepted as on official XJ custom map. I hope you understand what I said. If someone has questions, please tell us. We will be more than glad to answer them.

KiarFuzzy, the most enjoyable part about a map for me is playing through, looking for bugs and SC's whatever. I like exploring the map, more than I like just getting a fast time. I think some people feel the same way.

21/06/2010 00:30:00

sounds like a good thing.. gj

21/06/2010 00:57:00

+1 boolish

21/06/2010 01:38:00

machu pichu :D

21/06/2010 01:41:00

wow... i got confused a moment but i think i got it. Well,as someone said, maybe people would stop helping mappers for finding bugs and whatever... not now,but after some time when it gets booring. Anyways, its awsome that you released it.

21/06/2010 03:44:00

Nah I'm so happy there's an option of posting the maps out of public vote -,- good job

21/06/2010 04:51:00

Maybe I should finish this map I've been doing on and off since early 07 ... Won't be getting submitted to public though that's for sure.

21/06/2010 09:31:00

finally a good new system

21/06/2010 12:01:00

too long, didn't read

21/06/2010 12:01:00

i dont get why not, cause its the public that is going to make wr`s on them ( if they get accepted ). whatever. atleast keep making maps :p

21/06/2010 18:41:00

this is too long, maybe i'l read it tomorrow

21/06/2010 18:44:00
