New world record - Half-Life done in 20m41s

By OddYsseus·
Image not foundquadrazid has set a new world record for the classic 1998 game.

Presenting Half-Life 21.

Starting back in the summer of 2010, the estimated time for this run was thought to be roughly 27 minutes. However, after almost four years of painstaking planning, theorycrafting and execution, we have arrived at our final time, smashing all of our wildest expectations.

Not only do we owe this new world-record time to all the new tricks we've discovered, the new routes we've found and the new ways we've
learned to manipulate the game. A lot of the improvement from the first estimation and the previous world record (29 minutes, 41 seconds)
comes from the very hard work and countless hours put into perfecting each and every segment, no matter how short or trivial. This run has
truly been an endurance test for everyone involved, and we're extremely happy to finally be able to share it with you.

Enjoy, Half-Life in 20 minutes, 41 seconds!

Technical details:

* This run sets the new world record for a segmented speedrun of Half-Life on Hard difficulty with an improvement of 9 minutes. (29:41 -> 20:41).

* The total amount of segments is 317, 249 of which are shorter than 5 seconds.
* This run is heavily scripted using the in-game console, the most widely used scripts are jump spam, duck spam, 180* turn for gauss boost and precise use-key actions.
* To use the better demo functionality and the support of higher FPS values in the Steam version, a mod have been made to restore the gameplay to the way it was before the anti-bhop patch back in 2001. The mod also features a lot of new HUD elements to aid speedrunning. Read more and download here: http://wiki.sourceruns.org/wiki/Bunnymod_Pro

Further statistics for this segmented run are available as a Google Docs spreadsheet.
A lot of research for the run took place in a thread over at SpeedDemosArchive.
General information about Half-Life speedrunning can be found on the SourceRuns Wiki.

[slide=interview with qusdrazid i made a year ago, sorry for bad english, i did my best]YouTube 1: http://www.youtube.com/user/kzruns YouTube 2: http://www.youtube.com/user/quadrazid?feature=results_main Russia ShoCk: So, hello ASDFguy, or better said 9mmhandgun? How are you doing? Sweden Quadrazid: Hello, I'm very fine thank you and I'm atually quadrazid. Russia ShoCk: Nice to meet you man! Let's not hide facts, you're not very known to our community so it'd be great if you introduced yourself. Sweden Quadrazid: What should I say. I'm a half-life runner that like to play the kz maps in a different way. To me it is quite silly to bhop around in a game that have the bhop restricted. So I like to show whats possible to do in the maps in HL. Although I admire the skill of some cs jumpers. Russia ShoCk: Ok, you like it to be fast. Could you explain how does the whole concept work? Maybe some special plugins/settings that might help you in any way? Sweden Quadrazid: There isn't any special settings or tweaks. The game has sv_maxspeed 320 just as CS, but is not restricted to weapons, so the default speed is 320ups. And of course, the jump speed is not capped (until 2000 hehe). Russia ShoCk: You are the first guy to get me introduced to this aspect of jumping. How did you get an idea of running kz maps through original HL engine? Do you know other like-minded jumpers or are you alone in this big world? Sweden Quadrazid: It started in the HL mod adrenaline gamer, which nowdays even have a special jumpserver with kz plugins. And I guess it's also a great variety to the normal Half-Life running which doesn't focus that much on the movement. In kz maps the movement is very intensive. There are a few guys from the AG community doing this stuff as well, but mostly only casual runs. Russia ShoCk: It looks like it takes a maximum of self-control, reaction, precision and it's clearly neccessarily to learn map to an inch. How much time does it take you to learn and "beat" the map? What's your best achievement? Sweden Quadrazid: They are all tool-assisted. So they arent any achievemnts in that matter. They are only made for entertainment and to push the limits to see what is possible. Russia ShoCk: What do you mean by tool-assisted? Sweden Quadrazid: Slowmotion and segments (saves) Russia ShoCk: Oh well, so that's the secret? You're time-scaling the run, recording the map by parts and combining them into one? Sweden Quadrazid: Correct, multiple parts that is joined together in video software. Russia ShoCk: I knew it wasn't humanly to bhop like that haha. I'm sure you've seen a legendary wr run of a guy completing HL in less than half-an-hour? What do you think about it? Did you try yourself in this? If you're into it, do you know if it was recorded the same technique you use? Sweden Quadrazid: Yes, of course. The 29:41 speedrun by Spider-Waffle from 2005. It's a great record and indeed legendary. It's not tool-assisted (although one can claim scripts to be tools, jump spam script, 180* turn script for gaussboost ect.) It is a normal so called "segmented speedrun". It is all played in realtime but is using saves. The 29:41 run is split into 190 segments, so the average segment length is only about 10 seconds long. But it is many years old and many tricks and improvements have been found since then. I currently have the record for the "single-segment speedrun". Which is done in one part, just like the demos on xtremejumps. Clocking in at 32:55. So its only a few minutes slower than the 190 segments one which I am pretty proud of. I also have the records for segmented speedruns of the HL expansions Opposing Force & Blue Shift. But I can let you know that Spider-Waffle and I have teamed up and are working on a new segmented run, which is estimated to clock in under 24 minutes. It's only the "kzruns" that are tool-assisted, thats why they have their own account on youtube. Russia ShoCk: That's amazing, you're surely a master of your business. I found it at least very similair to AXN mod, did you try it as well? What are the differences? Sweden Quadrazid: I've only once tried AXN on a server. The differences is the slower ground acceleration, the decreased height after bhops, and the slowdown after landing from a jump that doesn’t exist in Half-Life. But once you got the speed up, it's pretty similar indeed. Russia ShoCk: So you didn't like it at all? I mean the AXN mode, it's speedy nontheless. Sweden Quadrazid: It just feels so sticky when you're used to HL. Like glue under your feets. Russia ShoCk: Alright, did you maybe try other similar "games" like defrag? I personally enjoy it alot and find it similar to what you do. Sweden Quadrazid: A little, yes. The CPM platform is actually similar to HL in some cases. The ultimate CJ got identical curve and speed egression as HL. So does wallstrafing. It's quite fun. Warsow's race mode is also pretty decent. Btw, CJ - Circle Jump, not Count Jump and LJ is referring to the LongJump module in HL. Russia ShoCk: So, I see you’re a jumper all along the board :) Well, as we're still here, on XJ, what is your opinion about it? I know you're not much interested in low-speeded runs but there is something that brought you in here, what was it? What do you like the most about us, if there is such? Sweden Quadrazid: XJ is a really big and serious community compared to the HL running community which is only a few people (but slowly growing). My intension was to open the eyes for the kreeds players to HL. I wish that some of the great CS players would put their skill, time and dedication into Half-Life instead of custom CS maps. Cause I really think they have the potential to it. But there havent been any that took the bait. Maybe this interview will help a bit. Russia ShoCk: You've surely captured our attention :) Mind a few quickies before we come to an end? Sweden Quadrazid: Shoot Russia ShoCk: Segmented or non-segmented run? Sweden Quadrazid: Segmented Russia ShoCk: You beat my record on 8b1_hellinashop by 01:44 mins, do you feel ashamed about it? Sweden Quadrazid: No :p Russia ShoCk: Fame or self-affirmation? Sweden Quadrazid: Combo Russia ShoCk: Skiing or a parachute jump? Sweden Quadrazid: Skiing Russia ShoCk: TV show or a movie? Sweden Quadrazid: Show Russia ShoCk: Ok it was fun to interview you and so was my pleasure, got any words to tell the community to bring it to an successful end? Sweden Quadrazid: Thank you for the interview. Last words: Never give up.[/slide] you can newspost it tho

15/04/2014 15:31:00

Slowmotion? I didn't know that they used that. Was slowmotion used for this run as well?

13/04/2014 00:06:00

wow

13/04/2014 00:06:00

This looks insane, gotta watch this! Thanks OddYsseus! <3

13/04/2014 00:11:00

awesome tas :>

13/04/2014 00:14:00

Gordon is a highly trained professional

13/04/2014 19:13:00

lol great comment :D

13/04/2014 00:26:00

omg bsz

13/04/2014 00:33:00

da fucking nice

13/04/2014 00:40:00

This is awesome on so many levels.

13/04/2014 00:42:00

I'm speechless

13/04/2014 00:43:00

they invented the word maniac for this

13/04/2014 01:10:00

sick

13/04/2014 01:32:00

hm...am i the only one who was never interested in these hl1 runs? I know i'm witnessing an extraordinary run, but still...

13/04/2014 01:36:00

And why was this uploaded to xj? -_^ Boring and uninteresting :(

13/04/2014 01:41:00

Counter Strike is a mod from Half Life and Half Life was revolutionary for his time. Have respect for this :)

13/04/2014 01:44:00

I'm pretty sure everyone knows that already, but this is unrelated to XJ and tbh I couldn't care less about a hl run :|

13/04/2014 01:49:00

its all about technics, many kreedztechnics are now typical in those speedruns. even if there were a defrag mod of half-life i bet OddYsseus would support it with XJ.

13/04/2014 01:55:00

yeah man it's not as exciting or entertaining as your le EPIC xDd ^_^ kz memes or kisses and hug threads. i thought cobrex posted atrocious shit but damn you're really claiming the throne on that one. no offense though

13/04/2014 02:28:00

You're just jealous that I didn't give you a hug or kiss!

13/04/2014 02:45:00

Whats my deal in this subject? And what atrocious things?

14/04/2014 14:47:00

this

13/04/2014 01:47:00

don't even know why you would post this garbage on here. bhop scripts and segments just lol.

13/04/2014 01:53:00

use whatever the game offers

13/04/2014 19:32:00

you obv dont know anything

13/04/2014 02:05:00

coolkid is my child

13/04/2014 02:17:00

ppl worked hard for years to present this run so if you dont like it - ignore it but dont bash..

13/04/2014 02:21:00

thanks oddy for posting this. looks quite amazing. what is the normal gametime for this game? never played it but it seem to be long, many many different locations filled with many dangerous mobs.

13/04/2014 09:29:00

4 - 5 hrs.

13/04/2014 02:26:00

cant tell exactly. if you play it for first time i may take you more than 5-6 hours cuz there are some very confusing places. If you know the way maybe 2-3 hours

13/04/2014 02:55:00

impressive

13/04/2014 03:20:00

I can't understand how he'd got 4k+ hps at 16:00.

13/04/2014 03:26:00

You can find the explanation here: http://wiki.sourceruns.org/wiki/Infinite_Health_Door Basically the damage the door does is set wrong.

13/04/2014 03:31:00

thanks!

13/04/2014 04:49:00

good work man, awesome job! sick run

13/04/2014 09:11:00

Sweet!

13/04/2014 09:57:00

The final of the game was hard for me, i was on the ground too much. Cheers for the WR :)

13/04/2014 10:23:00

Insane run! Good job =p

13/04/2014 10:36:00

insane

13/04/2014 11:18:00

That was unbelievable.. Respect for this boys!

13/04/2014 11:58:00

I love this.

13/04/2014 12:20:00

such speed much exploits wow I remember watching runs around 35 min back in the days, and I thought, shit this can't be done faster. A lot of dedication behond this one. Big respect.

13/04/2014 12:22:00

best game and run ever ! i just want to say 1 word: HOLYSHIT that is sick.Respect.

13/04/2014 12:24:00

I remember the Half-Life in Half an Hour speedrun by Spider-Waffle. I was speechless back then - now I gotta watch this!!!

13/04/2014 14:31:00

Yeah, the Spider-Waffle run was crazy, he has a short part in this run too. This run is bonkers though, as soon as they touch a physics object they fly into warp speed. Gordon Freeman has become a child of the gods :P

13/04/2014 14:51:00

Very impressed. I was one of those guys who once every something year liked to watch the first speed run. I thought it was incredible, but this thing here is exceptional. As a former KZ climber you must understand the value of this comment. This run seems like it's close to perfection, unimprovable if you like. I wish it was done in one run, by one person without any skips, but I don't think that was the point of this video. They simply wanted to show how to beat this game as fast as possible. A thing that really annoyed me, and I hope some of you can clear it out, how come when he shoots that "energy spike" that gives you boost, how come he did not have to turn around to gain the increase in speed? Is it some 180 flip around script or as I simply just a regular newb, who needs schooling in the old art form which is speed run in half life? I wanna say I'm happy that stuff like this gets on the frontage. These guys deserved it.

13/04/2014 15:06:00

It's done very fast with a 180° script. That's why you barely see it.

17/04/2014 13:41:00

The game is too tough to be done by one person in such a time.

24/04/2014 07:10:00

Hi Scare, as you said, the intention of this run was clearly make the fastest run possible. I can remember from older times, when 'eDark' had a similiar passion, to script and discover the fastest way to make runs and the longest jump the engine can do, as we can remember the "legend" of the 'eDark jump technique 2' some years ago. But this is not the unique category of HF's speedruns. As we can see on ( http://wiki.sourceruns.org/wiki/Category:Half-Life_1 ), we have the one-segments-runs, and scripted and non-scripted. quadrazid, leader of the HF21 team, have done the one-segmented with script and with no-limit-bhop-speed WR in 32:55 (July 1, 2011): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKIpyz0EjuY coolkid, member of the HF21 team, have done the one-segmented without script and with limited-bhop-speed WR in 36:35 (October 20, 2012): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNOdu8SyiEE See ya

13/04/2014 15:05:00

Just read what it was. Well I guess everything goes when you are recording a speed run in HL. I would like to see it without any cheats though.

14/04/2014 00:51:00

To be fair, the scripting system is in the game itself, it's not an external program that does it. You can open up your copy of halflife, type some commands into console and get the exact same effect yourself. It doesn't technically qualify as a tool assisted speedrun. At the same time, I respect the desire to keep input single dimensional to what the players hand can actually do with a conventional mouse keyboard setup. There's a really good single segment script free run on speed-demo's archive by coolkid, one of the guys who participated in this run. It's not cheating, all I'm saying, just a different type of speedrun.

13/04/2014 16:21:00

What a great record

13/04/2014 16:42:00

great game, epic.

13/04/2014 17:56:00

Astonishing ;o.

13/04/2014 19:12:00

Ladies and gentlemen - this is how you geek a game. :D Mindblowingly impressive and entertaining. I like how sometimes Gordon would just fly outta the map into a whole new level rofl.

13/04/2014 20:39:00

magic

13/04/2014 22:55:00

Amazing!

14/04/2014 00:25:00

My eyes can't believe what they saw, god sake, this is most perfect run I ever saw in my life, god bless your quadrazid.
