New Map Voting System

To raise the current standard of maps the map submission process will be dramatically altered. Please pay attention carefully to the following so that you understand in the future the process by which your maps will be submitted for the kz or custom tag. Maps will now be filtered through a mapping community.

It will be required that any mapper submitting a map have access to IRC. If you are serious about submitting a map through this process please realize that it will require a lot of dedication and effort on your behalf, just as it requires a lot of time on our behalf. This form of map submission will work something like this: We have a channel dedicated to discussing and sharing ideas – a place for new mappers and old mappers to communicate within the community. There will be a team of mappers that will check your map WITH you.

Let me make that clear – the map you submit will be looked at with you – therefore any constructive criticism will be given at this point and any information you wish to share about your map can be given to the map team. This will allow you to IMMEDIATELY fix any bugs within the map – it will also allow you to discuss the map with the map team – if you don’t know how to fix the bugs in the map the individuals on the team can also offer some guidance in helping you improve your mapping knowledge.

This process is being designed to encourage mappers to work collectively in the community – sharing ideas and sharing expertise. For the mappers with little experience please don’t be discouraged if your maps are not added officially because this process is designed to help you specifically increase your mapping abilities. Over the next few weeks we will be attempting to perfect this new form of submission, and seeing how it works out for mappers. Please realize too that there will be a team to test the jumps of your maps, as they are just as important as the aesthetic aspects of the map.

What we will do: Attempt to give encouraging feedback to be used at your discretion. Give you a forum to keep in contact with us about your map. A real time discussion via in-game, IRC, or/and Ventrilo about your map. Play your map with you and give suggestions / constructive feedback on what can be improved. Keep you up-to-date on what is going on.

What we will not do: Tell you what to do with your map or how to do it. Be rude or condescending in any form. Tell you when or where your map is to be released – these matters are at your discretion and yours alone. Do the work for you – we will help you as to the best of our abilities but we won’t do the work for you so please don’t ask us to. It’s a learning venture and we’re here to teach you not to do the work for you.

What is required from you? An open attitude about improvement or suggestions from other people is needed from you. Remember that this is simply constructive feedback that we will base mostly on bugs within your map. If there are other areas of the map that may require improvement we may offer an opinion or a suggestion but those are left to be decided upon at your discretion.

You will need to download IRC – www.mirc.com and connect to the Quakenet server channel #mappers (Guide) . The individuals there will be able to assist you further with your map submission process.

The Mapsubmisson Rules have also been changed and updated so we advice you to check it out.

06/04/2007 17:14:00

Sounds good, let's hope it will work and raise (and not drop - like seeing that some guys really work hard for their maps and accept them therefore [just because they are motivated and work a lot], even tho they still suck) the standards for new kz maps. Good luck :)

06/04/2007 17:16:00

Good, I guess there will be a max r_speed ?

06/04/2007 17:29:00

Some good mappers there :). Just dont let your personal feelings about a mapper who wants to submit a map get in the way :P.

06/04/2007 18:06:00

nice ...

06/04/2007 18:16:00

its a good idea.. but I happy i left 1.6 because if this would come early I would leave it after this post for sure.. maybe im lazy but thats much time .. and a map is nothing so serious.. now i dont wanna be rude or flame u guys.. in my opinion its unpractical and kinda stupid its a nice idea BUT mostly.. it will hurt the mappers.. it could take ages to realease their map.. No let the FLAMES begin hehe

06/04/2007 18:18:00

hm gj?

06/04/2007 18:49:00

mm.. looks kinda complicated for mappers who never used IRC.. but maybe help them to improve their abilities =/...

06/04/2007 19:04:00

Shizuka :)

06/04/2007 19:21:00

yay :D Wish i could get in IRC but the internet people blocked some ports or something because of a virus/trojan, so i cant use IRC, steam etc :( Will get it back at tuesday i hope :)

06/04/2007 19:24:00

Nah s0liD, the system has been implemented in order to save time. The minute your map is uploaded, we'll get it onto the private forums. You guys can come into #mappers and ask for an admin and there will always be someone online to go through it with you. The personal feeling of going through the map with an admin should help too, brings everything closer together - no longer any sort of overly-hierarchical feelings, I think anyway! :D

06/04/2007 19:29:00

Ok, this is why i think this system will be very good.. When you have betatesters they are usually jumpers which comment mostly on the jumps, but with this system you can get comments on how to improve the looks etc of the map.

06/04/2007 19:35:00

hm, nice news

06/04/2007 19:51:00

Hoho^ :)

06/04/2007 20:16:00

lol DaMp :D

06/04/2007 20:27:00

hmmm i guess that will work? not sure.. i think they should leave it up to the whole community, not rely on the opinion of 20 out of 35,000 but thats my opinion. And maxeh on the mappers list?!?!?! :p

06/04/2007 20:34:00

haha, I'm a mixture of mapping knowledge and a noob (but experienced noob) jumper ;D

06/04/2007 21:40:00

Ur a proffesional w-strafer maxeh ;) <3

06/04/2007 23:46:00

sounds interesting, let'S see if it'll work..

07/04/2007 03:24:00

Great idea! n1 =) GJ! I think this will turn out good. <3

07/04/2007 05:46:00

I think that this is a great Idea. Nice work. Im having a slight problem. I cannot join the IRC server: <div class='indent'>Connecting to irc://irc.quakenet.org/ (irc://irc.quakenet.org/)... === *** Looking up your hostname === *** Checking Ident === *** Found your hostname === *** No ident response === No hosts from Asia-pacific on this server, thanks..</div> So.... What about people who live in Asia and the Oceana region? This accounts for us Aussies :(

07/04/2007 12:01:00

technoblue: I just checked google and plenty of other people have had your problem.. I think they've been fine if they try connecting to another server -- check out http://staff.quakenet.org/servers.phtml Else, we can try and arrange something else for you guys that can't get on IRC!

07/04/2007 13:03:00

Simplicity: A pretty cool idea tbh, but a public vote is just unrealistic and would never ever work. You're asking why? It's simple to explain. Not everybody is cabable to decide wheter a map deserves the kz_ or custom tag or not. Only few of the 35000 members here have played _ALL_ maps and have a good overview about the jumps, textures, architecture. Another problem is that not everybody is reasonable enough to vote, there will be a lots of guys just voting "yes" because they like the mapper and/or are his friend. Another big big problem are the fakeaccounts. Some banned users started to register more than 20 accounts because they couldn't accept their ban. Just imagin if a kid decides that his friends map has to be kz'ed and he registers about 100 accounts to vote yes with. Im sorry to say that, but the E107 doesn't give us much options to fight against things like that. Therefore this system wasn't used in the past (yes, we actually thought about something like that ) cheers

07/04/2007 13:49:00

I think his idea was that every map gets the kz_ tag and the public simply plays the good ones and doesn't play the bad ones. Comparison with normal CS is that there are thousands of maps but very few meet the cut and the bad ones just get ignored. I think the same could apply in this case where there is a map made with kz_ tag and it's not very good or not a good jump.. people would simply not play it, it wouldn't get onto server rotations etc. Two main issues I can see from this: Hosting ALL of the maps on a site could be painful - in terms of space taken and time taken to keep it all up to date. Secondly, a lot of the best maps to jump could still come with bugs etc so having a team that checks that out is useful in that respect. I'd be all for opening it up to the entire community if those problems could be solved ;) But that's what Simp was getting at (he told me on IRC).
