Hey guys,

based on the discussions going on in the newscomments of http://xtreme-jumps.eu/comment.php?comment.news.1011 and the comments of the poll regarding the lastest rule change about the timerbug at http://xtreme-jumps.eu/e107_plugins/poll/oldpolls.php?64 I thought it would be nice to have a place in the forum to gather all the thoughts and arguments and keep the discussion going on.

Note: Please make sure you know what this is about before you bother to contribute in this discussion.

Well, however here is a brief overview about the different opinions out there that should be discussed.

Would you rather have records based on a REAL timer and beatable up to miniseconds (00:25:02 = 25,02 seconds e.g.), means having the record time determined by a correct AMX plugin or FPS-Death

or

stick to the old system and the Kreedz-Timer based on seconds, means records are and stay only beatable by a whole second and the time gets determined by the Kreedz-Timer AND FPS-Death if they are timerbugged/have a timeshift (according to the new rules against timerbugs)?

If you post in this thread please try to give arguments why you think that one of both versions is the one you'd like to see in the future and why you think this is the right one for kz-maps.

My vote goes to the first, a worldrecord is a worldrecord, even though it's just a melee second faster.

Plus now every single WR is beatable.

omilo23/03/2009 13:50

I would like to see maps being beatable by tenth of seconds, for example: WR being 25.2 and in order to beat it you need at least 25.1. And the timer should be amxx or fps death, so that the times are real. That's the fairest way imo.

m0ver23/03/2009 13:52

First one. Reason is that we are in 21st century and if technology allows for perfection, we should use it. KZ timer is obsolete, what I would like is to replace all timers in all maps with perfectly accurate one, even though it is infeasible.

There is no real argument for old KZ timer except nostalgia and fanboys. And I don't care for neither. If someone is faster because he geeked the map, then he is the fastest.

Should we record Usain bolt with old mechanical stopwatches because it is the real spirit of running? Times change, and people should cope with it. So, down with the inaccurate KZ timer, it isn't even used in public servers so why should it be used anyway.

First.
Beating demos by 0.01 may sound/be lame, but it would make xj A LOT more active. We would start seeing hell lot of a more demos per release, which all would be WR's and thus AWSUMMM.

I'm aware that most of the kids on XJ don't like the idea of having records being beaten by 0.01 seconds, but the only arguments they give are:

It's lame
It would be boring to watch a demo that's 0.01 seconds faster

As you can see, these are pretty weak arguments, since beating a world record is never "lame," nor are they under any obligation of watching the demos.

i agree with omilo !

the world records should be beatable by 0.1 seconds !
eg : my rec 00:36:50
your record 00:36:49

you win ! GJ !

the record method should be made by an amxx plugin, like an ingame timer, same with what Buptuk had in his bhopriver demo... just make that timer accurate and it will be the best thing ever! look at the kzm records ! people fight for 0.0001 seconds there! and its freakin awesome when u look at the record page. Sure the demos will be the same regarding the time... but they will be totaly different because of each players unique style of jumping. so besides the fact that u see two runs with the same time, you wont get bored because its not the same style of jumping :)

imho ... thats the most honest way in which it should be made!

Gl with whatever u choose :)

PS: xj should really start to go forward... like m0ver said... its the 21st century :)

i agree :d

Hm i prefer the second one, because oldsql ftw! :> sry no arguments^^

I think the first one is the best for XJ, but hf working with 0,xxx sec and so xD

Pah1s23/03/2009 15:17

i like the new timer rule, but i would still want to see like in pubs you can win the top time with even 0.01 second.

BLT^_^23/03/2009 18:48

make a new timer with minutes:seconds:miniseconds

goodhoopoe23/03/2009 20:14

i had already posted that idea) i vote for the first.

KEk323/03/2009 20:18

I vote milliseconds too...

First alternative, without hesitation.

This is what I've always wanted, and it'd be the ultimate timer system.

If this system is accepted, and a correct amxx timer is coded, then the competition will flourish like it's supposed to. The current system, which is basically created to avoid timerbugged demos, will automatically be included within this new system. People will be able to beat demos that were once said to be impossible to beat. I'm positive for demos being beaten by 1/10th or 1/100th of a second. For me I'd be more than happy to see 1/100. My old point of view based on 1/10th, but I've changed my mind. I want to see clintmo_longjumper[x] being beaten as quick as it possibly could!

People that don't want to see +10 minute long demos being beaten by 1/100th doesn't have to watch the demo, simple as that. It's not even in need of an argument since you are not forced to watch every single demo. Sport-o-holics like me love to see improvements, no matter how small they are.

The fastest demo on a specific map is a world record, and therefore it (+ the player) should be announced like it, no matter if the old demo were beaten by a mere 1/100th. The players who are dedicated enough to spend time recording, and chasing a WR, should be announced like a WR-holder if he simply beats the demo. Many of the 'impossible' demos are actually far from impossible to beat.

Thoughts,

If the (future) amxx timer and the record time (shown in fps death & demolyser) isn't 100% synchronized we would need a definite decision of which timer to use. Or could it be compromised somehow?

If it's not possible for them to be 100% synchronized, and we pick the amxx timer as the main timer, would demos recorded without this timer get denied?

If the demo won't get denied according to the question above, and the old demo is beaten by 1/100th - how can we know it's quicker if we use the fps death timer - and if the amxx and record time isn't synchronized?
