Some help on gpu please :)
Hi, i have mobo - Asus P5N - E SLI motherboard which i bought 2 years ago in 2007.
I have 7200gs gpu and want to upgrade now,,,
but the new 9000s series are PCIe 2.0 and my mobo says supports PCIe x16 (1.0/1.1 :s), i read some articles that my mobo can support the pcie 2.0 but not to full potential;
my question is (to make sure): will PCIe 2.0 gpu cards work on my motherboard Asus P5N -E SLI?
2.) here is list im thinking of:
1st choice) 9600GT
2nd) 8800GT
3rd) 8600GTS
(P.S - I might play left 4 dead and call of duty 4 /6 with the gpu)
Thanks in advance

9800 gt da best, but i dunno if it will work on your motherboard ;D
btw, 9600 gt suck ass
i;m with a 8800 GT (on my PC) and its a really great card
and with a 9600 GS on my laptop its a good one too :) but i prefer the 8800GT

hmm, it looks around the same price as 9600gt & 9800gt, ill think about it: 9800gt, and ill do some more research thanks both

at 03:45 is about PCIe, its a review from tigerdirect about 9800gt
If you get a 9800 GTX or GTX+ make sure it fits in ur chassi, it can be too big :) I rock a 9800gtx+ and it barelly fits.
i have 9800 GT :P first of all i wanted to buy 1gb memory on it, but there were no such cards in a shop =] so now im on 9800 GT 512 mb ;]] btw, its asus also)))
pci-e 2.0 is a gimmick mainly. no card can use the full 16x of a pci-e 1.0 slot anyway, and yes, it should be compatible both ways (2.0 card on a 1.0 board, and 1.0 card on a 2.0 board)
9600 is basically an 8600gts, and the 9800 is better than both. i have the 9800gt and its nice for the price.
This is interesting cause i was wondering the same thing.
I'm not too sure about urs v0nch as im basically 'computer illiterate' rofl
anyway, i guess this is the right thread to ask aswel -
im not too sure of my computer specs, but im getting into competative dod:s and i only have around ~50 fps with my 7600gt card. i wanted to update also to the 9800gt but wasnt sure if my computer could handle it. ive heard from a few people that because the 7600gt is pcie(no idea what this meas rofl) and my current pc can handle it, that it would be able to handle the 9800gt aswel? :S i dunno rofl

like tloft said, pcie 2.0 (new ones) can fit into pcie 1.0 motherboards

i suggest you 9600GT, should work & fit in your pc. It isn't the best one, but definately not bad... And costs not much :) But there might be a need to change your power supply to about ~450W
buy a newer card.. those ones are like 2 steps behind already.. look for ati 4xxx or 5xxx series.. or geforce 2xx series :) what's the point of buying a card that you'll have to change in like 1 year?
dragon, if you're playing a game thats 3 years old (source games) a 1yr old card is more than enough.
hazard, you can open it and look at it, then compare it to pics on the internet. a pci-e has a little hook at the end, agp and pci do not
Okay sorry for being on your thread like this, but I won't create a new one for a nearly same subject..
Ok so I got a 8600 GT 512 mo graphic card, but this one don't satisfy me, since my PC is "media optimized", i mean, reading videos and stuff is his good point. And this graphic card is exactly the same, so when I'm playin game like left4dead, I can't reach 100 fluent fps.. I tried so many configs and stuff on it, but I can only reach it when I'm looking at the ground or shit. it's nearly the same on every single games.
Now, I saw in stores that the 220 GXX 1go graphic cards were sold on like 70$.. And I read some stuff on internet, and discovered that this graphic card wasn't this good for games.. I wanted to have your opinions, and if possible, could you advise me something better for less or egal to 100€ (~110$ i'd say) ?
(my actual configuration is a E6400 dual core CPU [x2 2.4 ghz], 2go ram [can be upgraded to 4 go], vista etc ..)

Firstly, You can't find good geforce GTX series card for $70... (not even around it). Average GTX/GTS 2xx series card costs >~$130.
And as you requested to help with GPU decision, I suggest you:
1.If you like Nvidia - GeForce GTS 250 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130468 ). It ~fits your price and is very effective at gaming/graphics.
2.If you like ATI - Radeon HD 4770 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150369 ). It is also very powerful, and fits your price.
Last two things I'd change in your pc are - change Vista to 7 (might raise FPS a bit), and instead of 2GB of RAM put in 4GB.
And don't forget that background applications can also use resources.
Hope I helped you :)

Hey !
Thanks alot for your answers and your advises.
First : Yes I already thought to up my RAM to 4gb, about windows 7, i'll soon get an update from vista to it for 35€, which seems good.. So on this point I think it is "done".
Second : About my preference, I always prefered nVidia, but thanks also for giving me 2 choices :) Then, the EVGA 512-P3-1150-TR GeForce GTS 250 512MB costs around 90€ i think, so yes, that fits my price :) I'll read some articles about it to be sure of what am I doing, but also thank you very much for this ! :)
My question is answered, sorry again for being on V0nch^ thread like this
