Unable to start CS

I did just dust off the old faithful servant today to try out some CS 1.6 again. Everything works fine and I download and installed Steam and CS.
I start CS and connect to a server and play some.
Then it was time to make dinner so I shut down CS.
When I wanted to continue playing afterwards, the game freezes directly after I booted it. The only thing I see is the background with the CT/T on. No text comes up (new game, server, etc.). To exit the game, I must use Crtl + alt + del.

I tried uninstalling and download it all down again, but no improvement.

Would be really nice if someone knew if there's a solution to this problem!
