As i saw in the last news heL^_x recorded a demo for a guy named elfeN

I have an idea to prevent that to happen again.:

xPaw in New/Comments about fake demos and cheating

As xPaw showed the steam id of the one who records a demo can be found in this way.
My idea is that every, i mean every member of XJ should be asked for their Steam ID. Then after they submit a demo it should be checked if the demo steam id is the same with the already given steam ID on XJ.
If you don't write any Steam ID you are not allowed to upload any demo.

To create a way to ask each for Steam ID's i don't think is that hard in order to prevent further fake demos.

no need this.. just put in the rules @ xj: any guy who send demo must type status in console.. its easy 4 both. To find who send the demo and to write status..

It's prety easy to check for steamID number on demos, but any of the ideas abowe might make it easier for the demo admins. But more work for recorders. So which is more important? :)

nucLeaR20/12/2009 02:15(edited 20/12/2009 02:17)

Actually typing once your steam id is easier then typing status every time after a demo is finished. PS you cannot see the console during the demo and if he copy-pastes a cheater wouldn't lie putting a fake steam id, too ?

And who in this world can't know their steam id, i guess not every dumb can make a WR. In that case I'm dumber then a normal dumb.

About omilo's question 'what is more important':

More important is that XJ will never have such news with permanent bans and deleting demos after 2 weeks.

TlofT20/12/2009 02:26

doesn't status not work on lan games?

and that number in the txt picture isn't a steam id..

omilo, more you guys ofc =p

omilo20/12/2009 02:28(edited 20/12/2009 02:31)

You can see what is in consol in all in-eye demos. The thing with people writing their steamID's on a special page here on XJ is that there is need for coding of website and I don't think XJ has anyone that can do that atm.

So right now the easiest would be to make recorders type status in consol so demo admins can see it.

EDIT: oh ye, typing status on lan games doesn't even work. Seems like we have to keep it as it is for now until the Xj coders have more time.

edit again: You can find out the friends name by that number anyway, Mr loft.

the recorder could then just log in in the others steam account?
it s not a secure way to prevent fake demos :/
and xj is using the sid of the demos already

kot7k20/12/2009 10:06

yep, that happened in other community...
if one person records a demo in the account of the other guy it will be everything normal like steam id and it'snot fair so it would'nt help in anything.

ps: sry 4 bad english

m0ver20/12/2009 11:58

Can't you simply change that value with hex editor? Or is CRC there to protect such manipulation?

NeMiQ2220/12/2009 12:10

No need that console status command, you can check sid with every text editor in few seconds.

As far as I know you can't simply edit it, it's secured somehow. Fortunately.

it's just impossible to prevent for 100%.

example:
i go visit a record holder.
i make a wr with his computer with his account with his config.

So, demo submitted, they see oohhh steam id is not trouble's, even if they would read out pc specifications or wtf, and see its not my, and see its not my config, its still no proof that it wasnt me. even if the strafestyle would be like the recordholder, no proof :S
it could be a hazard.

so maybe one of only ways to detect it for sure is that the demo admin would stand in back of the recorder in real life while he is recording :D

I agree, but I don't think it would be a hazard. It's not like he's cheating or anything, we still get the good legal world record demo. Is it important who technically has it? What's the recorders' motives anyway to record with their friend's computer? I don't think that would be very popular.

nucLeaR20/12/2009 19:00

I did this because imo it's way harder to do WR on other's computer then in yours. I can't even jump 240 with my brother's G5 at his PC. :s

Hmm dunno if this is usefull. But made a php script that will extract the community id from the demo file. Could be included in demo upload system etc.

Here ya go (Just a sample with a demo by me): http://kreedz.dk/demo2steamid/demo2steamid.php

edit: if you want source code, just ask ;).

omilo20/12/2009 21:10

Ye it could be usefull to some extent. But people can still use others steam account :/.

gj for the little script anyway :)

i dont think it matters if someone does the wr with someone elses name.

the wr is the wr regardless of whos name its under, i think people should concentrate more on appreciating the run as opposed to who did it.

for instance hels run on streebl0ck with elfens name was fucking uber, and i was in awe of it, the fact that i now know hel did it not elfen changes nothing, it was still an amazing demo.

imo hel shouldnt have been punished and no changes need to be made, i think the community is caught up in the names more than the runs these days, tis a shame indeed.

perhaps instead of considering hel as immature, maybe it was an attempt to point out a profound flaw within the community today. ooooOOOoooo deep
