It's meant to be a folk song about love, simple lyrics about simple love and life, something similar to the 1800s American ballad "Oh My Darling, Clementine", if I could put it that way. So it's rather traditional (even a little corney for modern Chinese listeners maybe?), played with old Chinese folk-instuments, and a typical soprano is often required (You can hear that she's good there even the background music is a mess). And I never like this kind of songs but have to say it's quite good music that shouldn't die :D It's mostly enjoyed by older folks from the 50s, 60s, especially Southeast China.
