Study in Finland
Hi guys,
I applied for the ITPro Programme in Jyväskylä (half year IT study + half year working in IT company and then maybe Bachelor degree :P ) and I had been chosen.
The thing is I would like to contact someone willing to answer to few questions about life in Finland, prices of goods, public transport and such things.
One year is quite long period so I want to be well prepared. :)
If you were in Helsinki instead of Jyväskylä I would've been your ultimate guide, but no! Anyways I congratulate you for your approval for the studies n' stuff.
Prices of goods
1.5l Pepsi (light/normal)-bottle is approximately 2€ up to 2.80€ (in gas stations even over 3 euros)
A 25 pack of Sultan condoms is approximately 15-20€ (16.90€ in here)
Microwave pizzas are approximately 1€
Thats all you need to know when it comes to "goods". All of that is good. I'm afraid to say anything about public transport but 2.20€ for a bus ticket sounds good.
Jyväskylä is one of the great Finnish university cities, so you chose well. Too bad I as well live in Helsinki.
Prices of goods
Chips/crisps cost from 1€ (Euroshopper) to about 2,80€ (Taffel) a bag.
Energy drink costs range from 1€ (Euroshopper 0,5l) to 2,30€ (Battery 0,33l) a can.
Meat doughnuts cost approximately 1€ a bag containing 4 doughnuts.
I don't know anything about public transport outside Helsinki, but I know quite a few people from Jyväskylä. Maybe they're willing to help you.
Is this an university? Because if it is you'll get a big discount in multiple things (within the campus, not in the crocerystores). I'm studying in TUT where there are vending machines (alot cheaper) and KELA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KELA) has reduced the price of food served in campus. (Cost is around 4-5€ per meal, that includes everything)
I believe you were expecting prices of food you can survive on (I can't eat microwave pizzas, drink only pepsi and energy drink every day :P). So... For one day meal of, let's say chicken you'll have to pay like 2-5€, 5€ being the most expecive brand. Other than chicken, price is around the same. Frozen pizza is around 3€, if you want a "real" pizza they'll cost you 6-10€, (again 10€ being the most over priced tiny ass pizza you can get from Kotipizza, so use the kebab/pizza places) :)
Milk: 1 liter=under 1€
Ice tea: 1,5L = 1 €
Water (bottled): Don't buy this ^^ you can drink from the tap here.
Coffee: Cheap... Don't have the prices for you on this.
Buss fare is 2,5€ in Tampere.
Hope this helped, give requests and I'll/we'll try our best to answer.
Thank you guys!
kafds: That SULTAN condoms are real essential good xD
Gargoyle: JAMK University of Applied Sciences
all the information are useful, thanks
Anyway I'm big fan of beer so this interests me a lot. What kinds/brands are available and prices of them, especially draught ones.
AFAIK Finland is quite flat country especially in the centre and south so bicycles are popular way of transport from I've heard, so I'm thinking about buying one. What's the price of some random? I don't need any special I'll probably sell it before leaving.
I'd like to buy a jacket (it's heavy to bring one with me in luggage) and I'm not familiar with weather conditions (I have an idea but you know it better ^^) not uber pro for Himalayas trip but not some china crap.
And what about bread, dozen of eggs, spaghetti? I'm used to cook sometimes from dormitory so I have no problem to make meal on my own. Casual one of course.
coffee (500g) 2-3e
I think milk is something 0.80-0.90e. Bicycle is great.
Beer 0.33L about 1e, dno about bars / clubs (but anyways more than 1e)
24 bottles costs about 22e (cheapest)
I saw some pictures of that city, it looks great :)
Nice chose

omg :) cost so much..
In Ukraine the most cheap i think.. 2l - 1e :)
But I guess your paycheck is tiny compared to Finlands :D
LoL owned. finlands sounds closer to americans beer prices
We also have 1 liter cans of beer, they cost a bit over 5 euros. Depending on the bar it can cost like **** (5 euros for 0,5l) or it can be somewhat cheap. But what do I know.
When you buy a jacket make sure it's warm, windproof and waterproof. Something resembling a ski jacket could be fine. It can get somewhat cold in there, all the way down to -30 degrees in winter (yes, you're screwed).
We've got a bunch of breads. All the way from French white bread to rye bread. I've heard that Finns really like rye bread, so you have to try that if you haven't.

i live in jyväskylä, nice chose!
isn't there something like prohibition in finland? like you can buy alcohol only in special stores, and drinking on public is prohibited? I have a classmate on college who spent holiday there and he said the cities are dead in the evening..

OH MY FUCKING GOD ;o
In Lithuania you can get crap beer tolstyak (or local beer named after animals or smth) or beer lightning for 1e 2.5L plastic bottle (we call it BAMBALIS)
Normal beer costs about 0.7 e for 0.5L

doesnt every country have all kinds of bread? o.O
Here we have a lot of crap beer (30-40c 0,5L bottle; 1E draught) but also a lot of very good Czech beer (1-1,2E draught 0,5L). They are comparable with German or Belgian beer. I'll miss them...
Are there only Heineken, Budweisser, Carling or some other brands? Are in Finland breweries?
TlofT: All not for sure since every country has it's own specialities so there are thousands kinds but most common may be available.
When I was in England they have mainly mawkish bakery products which I don't like but Flibo mentioned rye bread and it's fine. It's common here.
Yes, we have several brands (most are not brewed in Finland though). I don't know much about foreign beer, but the Finnish brands can't be that bad compared to them. The most known ones are Karhu, Olvi, Koff, Lapin Kulta and Karjala.

It's allowed to drink in public places if you don't cause harm. Stronger (>4,7%) drinks are only sold in Alko, the only alcohol store in Finland, which is owned by the state.
