Limits in bsp size?

Godspeed is giving us a strange bug (Serenity has the same bug so we have to solve it or we cannot release it :( )

When the bsp file reaches over 16 MB there can only be one player on the server. If a second player tries to connect the server freezes and you cannot move (or join if you are the second player).

First we thought it had something to do with clip nodes but thats not it. Instead it seems like its the size of the bsp file. Over 16383 and it bugs and below 16384 it works.

Have anyone of you heard of a limit of the bsp file for hl/cs? And why then should it be at 14 bits and not 16 bits?

dunno about the error, but WTF 16Mb, is the map rly big or something?? Are u using the "null" texture, otherwise the map can increase in size... :P

Hm, I just remember about kz_man_indiana which has the same bug :(

Looks like even Kreedz had no solution for this problem :(

Thanks Faker looked it up and the bsp is 18 584 008 bytes which means that it could be the size of the bsp. Interesting...

kz_man_ailenbase
kz_man_congo_b01
kz_man_forest

Those three are over the critical size as well. Anybody who knows if they have the same bug? Cause in that case we might be able to solve the problem with a seperate wad file, which means Godspeed and Serenety can be finalized.

kz_man_ailenbase
kz_man_congo_b01

have the same bug, too.

But kz_man_forest works well, dunno why.

I really hope that you guys find a solution :)

Good luck

We really hope to solve it to and man_forest is the smallest of them so that might be why it works fine, it's close to the limit.

Then our theory might be right which opens up for solutions.

Sry forgot to answer you ;-) got so exited over fakers answer since it might prove my theory.

It is a big map, it got two sections one for practising jumping and one for previews from the maps to come. That second part has a timer and I don't remember exactly but it took a good test climber (who can reveal himself if he wants to) over 6 min when he tried it with the timer (he can probably push that time a bit). It's 7 rooms from gigablockier, one from AliFe, one from Underwater and 2 from serenity. And the practise part with lots of good climbs are bigger :)

And serenity is a very big map as well atm 18 MB.

insen mapper24/09/2006 16:35

demolites lj map for the contest is 21 mb big

Shizuka mapper24/09/2006 16:45

InseN the whole map or just the bsp file? We are only looking at the size of the bsp and wheter bsp sizes over 16383 is making them buggy.

maniac24/09/2006 17:02

The .bsp file of dEMolites map is 21MB big.
But I think its because of the textures!

Shizuka mapper24/09/2006 17:25

Oki if the bsp file is 21 MB does it have a bug like that? How many players have been on the map at the same time? It would be very interesting to know because so far every map that we know of that is over 17 MB (forest works but is in the critical zone of over 16 383 but close to it) has that bug.

dEMolite mapper24/09/2006 17:54

We haven't tested it yet but u can try it out with cg_dmolongjumps

Shizuka mapper24/09/2006 18:33

Don't think that I'll have to test it. I can almost promise you that you will have that bug (in other case my theory is wrong and we have to start all over). Plz let me know when you have tested it.

Well we were to impatient to wait so we tested it on two different dedicated servers. Both crashed and the errorlogs where (one server was linux and the other windows).

Fatal error - Dedicated server
Cache_TryAlloc: 2331984 is greater than free hunk. (windows)

FATAL ERROR (shutting down): Cache_TryAlloc: 2331984 is greater then free hunk (linux)

I would advise you to make a seperate wad file to reduce your .bsp then it might work we haven't tested that yet.

fuzzerd24/09/2006 23:05

we've had 15 people on forest and I think 15 people on congo and 15 people on indiana in phoogi server, but now the server sucks and indiana crashs and the other 2 lag when people are downloading the map.

Yup, played those maps alot on PhooGi server

Shizuka mapper24/09/2006 23:33

Hmm is that a dedicated server or a listen server cause that could be of difference. We always test on an dedicated server. dEMolites map works fine when running it locally on the computer but crashes a dedicated server.

It's dedicated, but i think it was listen some time ago.. Not sure.

Shizuka mapper24/09/2006 23:49

It would be very interesting to know if it worked when it was listen and don't work when it's dedicated.

We are really trying to work this out so all theorys and suggestions are welcome. The ting with dEMolites map is a clue and we are now testing if it is enogh to make a wad file instead of including the textures in the bsp.

dEMolite mapper25/09/2006 03:20

i dunno but we can send the bug valve ^^

aegget mapper25/09/2006 12:06

i would say null alot and try to make the sky area so tight that it doesnt create spaces that will create higher map size
