Limewire sued for $75 trillion
LimeWire, the company behind the free peer-to-peer file sharing program of the same name, is being sued for $75 trillion, reports Law.com.
Citing Section 504(c) of the Copyright Act, a team of thirteen record companies claim that Lime Wire’s file-sharing program made the company liable for the numerous alleged copyright infringements committed by users. The maximum award per infringement is $150,000, which the record companies seek to multiply by the 10,000 estimated infringements.
But U.S. Federal District Court Judge Kimba Wood noted LimeWire’s massive number of users, which the company said number more than 50 million per month, make the record companies’ interpretation untenable.
“If Plaintiffs were able to pursue a statutory damage theory predicated on the number of direct infringers per work, Defendants’ damages could reach into the trillions,†wrote Wood, calling the requests “absurd.â€
Instead, Wood argued that record companies should receive one damage award per work, rather than one award per infringing party.
LimeWire’s defense attorney Joseph Bao applauded the Wood’s conclusion, which comes months after LimeWire was forced to shutter the service. Prior to the close, LimeWire attached hundreds of thousands of new downloads each day, the company said.
75 trillion dollars sure is a lot.....
Anyone else think this is ridiciolous?
Does any humanbeing actually have that sum of money?

Actually no, but if every single user that used limeware pay for it I'm sure they will collect their 75 trillion easy.
I'm not saying it's fair or worth but all p2p are ruining record companies
These applications are just as TPB. Only reason why uTorrent and those other guys aren't getting sued is because they aren't the ones putting out the torrents, I guess. Who knows, those guys behing TBP have been in a shit ton of trouble. Don't they own Universal Music like 200 million dollars?
u can by the world with that kind of money
btw what does this program do?
Like torrents, just all in one single software. And a lot less trustworthy.
I saw this coming from awhile ago, personally I thought it would happen earlier.
Yeah, it's not big suprise that they actually got sued, but the amount of money they're being sued for is so ridiciolous.
Why are they whining that people download? If they would make something worth paying for, i think that most people would buy it. Also i think that when people are downloading music, they only do the music industry good, as it helps them spread.
First off all, if you download it, I'm guessing it's also worth paying for.. unless you only download music you dislike?
Secondly, how does pirates do the industry good by not paying for their music? Recording labels earn money on spreading their music controlled, through medias such as youtube or similair, not by millions of people downloading it for free with no intention of ever buying it.

^ Why I download and don't give a shit.
Who gives a shit if it's ruining companies, people who make music should do it for the love they share for what they do, they shouldn't make a trillion dollar.
Who ever said they should be paid as much as they do? Same with football players, sadly there's no way to rip them off yet.
Also, people still use LimeWire? :D

1.It doesn't matter if you like the song, its more about; is it worth to pay for? The answer is mostly no.
2. The people that downloads it may spread it to friends and such. If they couldn't download it from the start that wouldn't be possible.
I also have to say that i don't download, if i want to listen to music i do it through free services like Youtube and Spotify. I would never buy an album as it is now since i don't agree with the philosophy of these companies. I believe in a open world where people could share without being called a pirate.
oh and btw the music industry gets more money than they ever need. I don't get how they could whine when they have enough money to survive the rest of their lives, but they need more. At the same time people are starving to death because they don't have any money to buy food. Thats just wrong!
EDIT: +1 NOEL
shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit !

No not really, the more you download music for free from limewire the more you don't need to actually buy the song itself. So it becomes to pointless to sell songs anymore, so in return money goes down for the industries.
Limewire was the biggest one of these programs that you can download music (with a cost of course) but it doesn't really matter if it's free music.

I really think they do earn more money on it, i saw a video where there was a author. He put up his work on the internet for free for a month. After that the sales of that book increased like crazy. It's pretty much the same on the music side. Before internet and TV, musicians didn't earn a lot of money. Look at them now, like NOEL said just look at MTV Cribs.
Think about it for a second guys.
A song on itunes is like what, 1 dollar?
Of that, itunes gets a share, the producers get a share, the songwriters get a share etc etc.
A concert ticket costs everything from 200-600, maybe eve nmore, danish crowns, which is around 50-120 dollar.
And they can sell up to what.. 40.000 at the largest concerts?
Artists have never earned much from selling cd's. It's the live gigs that makes them money. CD's has always been more of a tool to raise awareness, now with streaming sites like youtube. Creating a song/video that goes viral can earn you so much money, i guess you wouldn't believe it.
Download all you want guys, support small, uknown, and extremely talented artist instead of chris brown, kanye and fucking... i dont know.
Already done, noel... Already done
