Hello everyone i think the mappers should get some more attention on the site, after all they are the ones who make kz possible. For example where you view the servers to the left you can see the world record but not who made the map, and maybe if you type /wr ingame you could also see who made the map?

eMTi11/05/2011 11:03

Mapper already do get attention on various ways:

- mappers get mentioned when a map is released
- mappers most likely include a texture in their maps saying "Map by: "
- mappers are mentioned in the download section, when downloading their maps.
- mappers do have their own icon in the "Online"-List on the right.

Considering your ideas:
- server-box on the left: true, could be done imo..
- /wr: that's not in xj's hands, since these are plugins made by "other guys". Even if there was an "official xj /wr plugin", I dont want to know the mapper, I want to know the wr.

Fruggline11/05/2011 11:55

It's very true that the mappers get alot of attention i just feel like they should get atleast almost as much as the world record holders. So as i said i think they should mention the mapper in the server section and maybe in the demo records? Well i guess your right about the /wr but i think there should be something like /mapper but that might be to much work considering most maps have textures telling who made the map like you said.

Punk^11/05/2011 12:33

How would you mention them in the records? Have the recorder write: "Map by XX"?

Fruggline11/05/2011 12:52

I mean on the record demos page :)

dEMolite mapper11/05/2011 19:21

as i wrote some post in the past. xj is really lacking some mappers support.

good xj is the main portal for kreedzing but their main focus is the records. so the recordholder gets more attention than a mapper.

the main problem again which i wrote years back when i was inactive, that the maper is really under estimated / underrated.

dont have actually / accurate rates how long a normal jumper needs to play to get a small record. but truly its not that much a mapper gives effort in to the map.

Getting the idea/conceptual parts & theme can take a couple of hours
Creating / searching the textures can take up days & weeks. (Weeks only when the mapper creates themself)
Creating the map days/weeks (depends on how large the map should become and how detailed)
Playtesting a few days (2-3days normally)
Editing/Balancing/Fixing (again 1-2days)

those are the average times for a normal mapper which dont know every single key shortcut in hammer. and even when we would count the days and hours together. it will be clear that the mapper takes more efforts into the map than a single recordholder.

Even when we would have hardwares like the 2000 age where a map can take up a fullweek to compile.
The count results would be higher because of the compile time.

So what can XJ actually do to support the Mappersscene on KZ?
Its one of the important questions:
Getting up Map contests (with proper rules egg.: admins are out of it and prices)
Map Reviews (to make older/newer Maps more attractive to the wide audience)
Mapdbs (Story/Instructions/Screenshots not just one/Commenting)
Mapperslist (Background Story/Introducing/Maplist with creation year and linking to the Mapdb link)
Frequent Tutorials publishing under the Articles page
Frequently writing/published Mapping/Map Blog?

Even the list is short there can be a lot done but in the end its just what the community wants.
The mapping scene is just to small at the moment and its still getting smaller.

Is the work even useful then for that small group?
Since there arent any Mappers in the Headsections its the mappers thing to get up with ideas to get it handeled by XJ.
But yes you are right the mapper is underrated in this scene.

remake11/05/2011 21:51

Agreed with demo, even the weekly very rarely has something about mapping in it..

dEMolite mapper12/05/2011 09:07

don't know why the weekly hasnt anything in it but it could be that none of them has the contacts to them or they do more what the audience wants and thats clearly more recordholder news and nowdays movie & moviemaking things. its a shame but we need to live with it, since you can't make profit out of mapping atm for the scene (actually yes but the audience of xj doesnt care for it). The audience likes more the movies and the records so getting a stamp on a movie or on a record is quite a lot easier to achive than in mapping.

Maybe time will come and it will change or a few mappers should gather together to build something up to get approval from the heads of xj to make the life of a mapper more stable or reasonable.

And i think thats one of the problems why mappers are stopping producing maps for kz. Because they dont get the attention they actually deserve for their hardwork.

even for me it was a point why i had stopped mapping for kz after my lack of ideas.

Fruggline12/05/2011 13:44

You've got some great ideas/thoughts dEMo :)

dEMolite mapper13/05/2011 22:51

and even as you see from the responses the users doesnt care. its a shame

Fruggline14/05/2011 01:19

Yeah ):

hm^ mapper VIP14/05/2011 13:51

demolite: +1

For example:

Every noname where geeks for example one cC-record get points, but when u uploaded some maps, u get nothing....
The mappers are underclassed...

No MAPS - NO RECORDS.

Good thread Fruggline!

dEMolite mapper06/06/2011 01:14

still no answer?
Glad that i am an inactive mapper.

to much work for this community which is not operating with mappers and the mappers dont get honored from the users :/

Fruggline06/06/2011 02:49

Sad panda is sad

VErzuZ06/06/2011 11:37

I CARE!!!!!

ShoCkrecord holder Tournament #2 VIP06/06/2011 16:21(edited 06/06/2011 19:27)

Too bad this idea has never visited my mind, but you did right initiative to get it up. Indeed, the mappers here a truely underrated, what is no doubt shame for this community and offence for mappers themselves. Still i know almost everyone mapper out here and the maps they created. You guys opened my eyes to such a seemingly small thing for us (jumpers) and much bigger and important for mappers.

Demolite cited a few interesting thoughts as an example which should be no doubt implemented by staff.

You got my support.

Yeah map contests and reviews would be perfect ! :)

sooshkarecord holder06/06/2011 23:55(edited 07/06/2011 00:04)

record holders should get more attention, i think it's fine as it is now, especially since for the last few years almost all maps were boring to play and only focused on looks. and please, making an xj wr is way harder than making a map.

[/blockquote]

just had to laugh

dEMolite mapper07/06/2011 00:21(edited 07/06/2011 00:23)

then laugh if you dont know anything of mapping.

but without mappers(leveldesign) there wouldn't be any KZmaps or what would happen when the mappers wont map for kz anymore? less and less demoreleases followed by unbeatable demos.

and its clearly that a mapper takes more time and effort into a map which a recordholder doesn't.

P.S those are the perfect examples of a fucked up community which doesnt honored those guys who makes it possible. i can't believe it. if i would see those guys in reallife i would beat them in their faces...

Fruggline07/06/2011 02:43

I'm embarrassed for my silly suggestions they are nothing against all yours dEMo :) @hii have you tried mapping? I'ts not as easy as you might think it is...
