How do you gstrafe?

Just wondering when you scroll your mwheel for gstrafe, do you just scroll it by one notch? Or is it the same as bhop? as in. when bhopping it isnt necessary to scroll one notch of your mwheel per jump. Is there any way to scroll your mwheel for more than one notch during gstrafe?
