hey , i'm not a pro mapper or something but ill explain you in my way.

Only thing u should download is here:
http://xtreme-jumps.eu/download.php?view.764
has everything inside you need to start mapping , except extra models, textures e.t.c

Mapping ain't hard but to learn you need to stick with it .
Many people start and then get bored or lazy because they can't find
solution for their problems or dont know what to do as next so they give up or leave it for another time (Happened to me ^^).

First i recommend you to search in Google for Tutorials for setting up
Valve Hammer Editor & Batch Compiler. it's not that hard but it can get complicated , just get here and ask us for anything , trust me on google you will find alooot of guides for mapping , and also on YouTube !

In my experience to learn faster you need someone who will be able to answer ur questions or problems , basically someone helpful .
For better mapping i guess you need to learn and read alot guides, information for hammer editor and batch compiler .

For a start you should learn making some Simple Room , and build stuff inside it such as any objects you imagine .
After that you can start learning the entity's example func_wall which is useful , info_teleport_start which is the player entity e.t.c
mapping is interesting mate and im sure thats why you want to start

Just work hard and time will tell , you can't make a great map in few days or even learn mapping in one day .

anyways hopefully you will success the begin and ask us here
on the forum for anything related to mapping :)

It's all right mate .
You dont need any special graphic card for that, to be honest you dont need anything extra its just a programm for mapping like the software you use for making videos i guess .

Slow movement can happen if you have programms opened that take much ram memory from ur PC or some game running on
except steam , any browser , msn etc even cs 1.6 dont effect the VHE.
But if you notice something weird with textures let us know.

And keep in mind from my experience , when you Compile maps
(from .rmf to .bsp with batch compiler) it's better having any other software closed or games etc because it takes some time to compile
a map and while compiling your screen might flash or be laggy since it uses your whole computer system speed (correct me if i am wrong) but after that everything goes to normal.

my best advice is to always try to create realistic looking maps so you will skip that in many cases loooong stage of creating boring and flat maps. simply dont satisfy yourself with a simple layout and always try to make it look advanced and better. of course that takes some practice and skills but these may come quickly.

or try to be creative when you have found a nice enviroment picture and try recreating it in hammer.

helped me a lot in the early days.
