leggie's monthly challenge discussion
Let me start off by saying I obviously did not come up with leggie’s monthly challenge, do not supply the generous prize money every month that leggie puts up for grabs, and ultimately don’t decide what leggie decides to do with said money. However, the recent monthly challenge newspost and small discussion/thoughts from a few community members got me thinking about some potential new and better ideas. Leggie (or even XJ staff), I trust you’ll give my post some consideration with an open-mind and not quickly dismiss it. If nothing else, I hope this thread will spark some interesting discussion about things we the community can do to increase activity.
When the monthly challenge was first announced, I’m sure it got a lot of people pretty hyped for some fierce competition and had people eagerly awaiting the comebacks of former top players to duke it out with the new (or old depending on how you look at it) players. At least that was my hope, and for the first few challenges we did see some form of competition in the likes of Toffifee/kSiunkaS/LEWLY. It wasn’t what we all expected, but at least it was something. But things kind of died down, players went inactive again, and one player (excluding shNz for mountez) continued to scoop up the monthly prize with zero contention.
I want to believe that some of the main reasons for this challenge were to increase activity among the recorders, give the viewer’s something to look forward to every month (demo, movie), and for leggie to give back a little something to the community he loves (?). And don’t get me wrong, it definitely delivers on a few of these. But I think something can fulfill all of these a bit better; monthly cups. I think monthly cups would be the way to go, similar to how the Quake community hosts Duel cups every Sunday with a small prize pool. People love watching things live, and I think Kreedz is no exception. No matter if you’re an old player or a new one, it is still quite entertaining. People like DeathClaw or LEWLY get an average of 20-80~ concurrent viewers watching their streams. That’s just them in their LAN, with some music or skype on, recording in hopes for teh urn. Oddly enough, it’s still entertaining especially if the chat is being lively and interactive with each other. Now imagine if there’s a scheduled cup every month, with notable player sign-ups, maps, etc, all revealed beforehand. Sure it might not be some crazy number of viewers, but it will be relatively decent for Kreedz. I’m really racking my brain right now trying to figure out how this approach would not bring more activity towards the scene in comparison to how things are currently transpiring.
One last thing I want to touch on regarding cups. Cups are a peculiar thing in where your above average player that isn’t quite at the top yet can come in and totally dismantle established players. These players could end up becoming the next great jumper, build up a new following, and have people rooting for the underdog every month. What’s great is the $50 is just enough incentive to get people to sign up and give it a shot. After all, they only have to show up for say one weekend out of the entire month to try their ‘luck’. However, players who spend the time learning and training the maps in the week(s) before the cup will have the clear advantage going into it. This seems like a win/win for the casual player who spends whatever time he has in pubs, or someone like an active recorder who would want to put more effort into it.
Anyway, there are a million more things I could talk about but I’ll wait for some more posts and any input anyone has. Of course, this is just a simple proposal towards mainly leggie or any other community member who wants to step up. It could end up going nowhere or take off into something big depending on much effort and thought we want to put into it. If people are interested we can hammer out the specifics (sign-ups, maps, times, and how everything else would all work at a later time (I have ideas).
TL:DR – I think the current version of leggie’s challenge has grown stale and didn’t come through on what was initially expected or hoped for. I propose a new idea of monthly cups and incorporate streaming into it in hopes to boost general activity and to give the players/viewers something more grand and exciting to look forward to every month.
He said it all.
I agree with you.Cups are very interesting, you are all on fire and focused against your enemies.I thought also may be if we have something like "CHALLENGE HOUR" i mean for example faker writes a newpost at 12.00 and there is 1 map : bkz_goldbhop. You should record it until 13.01 and the best demo will get points, vip or something like this, so we will have 1 hours, lewly can be offline, i can be on and win the challenge, what a surprise huh?So i think this will bring some activity to the site and we will stay alert :) so many ideas can be told, just we should use our creativity to help with good ideas. :)
Also i heard 1 idea, i dont want to steal it but just to put it here.Something like world championship bout kreedz. There will be national country teams(Bulgaria,Germany,Sweden etc.) There will be 5 of the best jumpers in the country at this time. There will be groups A,B,C,D..... playing matches 1vs1 taking points etc. etc, you know what i mean :) big project
P.S. before some1 makes fun of me with my english, yea i know its bad :D
After all , there are always changes and will be .
Cups + getting the stream up here http://speedrunslive.com/
A stream there can start with 5views and end up with a hundred later without a problem, for everyone is there for one thing, watching speedruns. And what makes speedrunning more entertaining?
A speedrun duel.. sort of..
due to all the recent "trash talk" towards the challenge i've actually being thinking about stopping it, i like the incentive of people suggesting new thing's but if you do a points tournament like a prochallenge thing, who will win? lewly. if the best players show up to the cups who's most likely going to win? lewly. there's only 2 ways that he won't win most of any sort of challenge, if he's not allowed to be part of it (which is unfair) or if the challenge had nothing to do with jumping....
i mean the cup idea is cool and all but people have an equal chance of recording a demo compared to beating him in a cup...i've even tried to pick maps he hates so it will lower his fight for it... it's not mine/lewlys/xjs fault that nobody else is even attempting to beat them anymore....

Let me clarify before we continue that my intention was never to ‘trash talk’ your efforts and I’m ashamed by my writing if you ended up at that conclusion. I have nothing but the utmost respect for you and what you’re doing for the community. Also my point with making this thread was never to talk about LEWLY, why he wins, what maps you choose, why nobody else records for the challenges, and so on. The real point was that I think there’s a way in which we could boost activity by a larger amount every month on multiple fronts. For the record LEWLY would obviously be allowed to participate in the cups and actually would be encouraged to. I don’t know where you got the idea that he wouldn’t be allowed. Of course he’ll have overwhelming support and odds to win each cup, similar to the current challenge.
I also don’t entirely agree with how you view cups. When I think of cup players, names like chrizZo, Gene, NeW, Toffifee, Xavi, Kolombos, Cypek, Resolute, MepH, come to mind. There are obviously a lot of other well respected cup players so forgive me for not listing them all. Anyway, some of those people are established players who have held many world records in the past and some are lesser known players in the recording scene but feared in cups. The idea behind the cups is that anything could happen. For example if we went with single elimination and a top player played some guy he thought was an average joe in the round of 32 he could be pretty surprised after getting knocked out early or having a closer battle than he initially thought. One slip up and you could be out of the entire cup. Personally speaking that’s what I find to be glorious about cups and why they can get so intense. But you’re probably right, sometimes these lesser known players fall short and we end up with a legendary grand final (think back to zhady vs koukouz – over 500 viewers on HLTV). Either way it makes for some entertainment and I’m sure you would agree.
+1 pizza^
no i didn't mean you we're trash talking it, i meant alot of the comments on it, and for the cups i may have mistyped that or you misread, but my point was if people get pinned in a cup with lewly why wont they have the same view as going up against him recording? that was my point :p.
Good idea pizza. This same thought has crossed my mind quite a few times too tbh. I mean if something on XJ is gonna be supplied with money, then doesn't it have to be somewhat special or so to say out of routine. I'm not saying recording is not interesting, it's just that I don't see the demo recorded for a challenge anything different from what regular releases have, when on top of that the event became monotonous, failed at surprising people and did not succeed at it's main purpose - to show a fight, whereas cups could possibly compensate it all.

For that you could just go to any national community and watch the same not-that-impressive demo. I mean it's XJ, we already have wr on goldbhop, why recording a demo that is most likely gonna be seconds slower. It's not a show I would fall for.

I was going to host that concept a month or two ago. I've planned out everything, was only waiting for a plugin to be coded but I was fooled. It was supposed to be a relay cup though, not 1vs1.

It has it's pros though:
1) It's more competitive (considering no one except lewly even attempting your challenge)
2) It's a live show, thrilling.
3) Tends to be unpredictable.
4) Lasts longer than any wr.
5) Good platform for streaming and commentating > hence a real show to be waiting for.

Jesus man... kolombus.. and no me? :/
Btw the problem still is... nobody can get up the god damn cupserver.
Years ago it was interesting to play cups even for getting VIP , I imagine if there is a prize of 50 $ ... It will be good , I don't get it why leggie is so sure about LEWLY ? Cups are only 5 minutes dude... everything could happen ... He can fail for example ?
I just want to say as an outside spectator with no role within the community, I really like these challenges, I dont care if who wins, as long as its the guy who does the best time. Thats all i want to see, the best time. LEWLY is the current provider, before him it was kayne, before him it was kkz, before him it was kelta, before him.... You catch my drift. KZ has a tendency to get one king at one time. One guy who is that actully just that level above the rest. Once again i feel like people wants to fix something that aint broken. I mean lookmat it, every month we get this sic ass mostwanted demo, edited to perfection with the best kz the present has to offer. The lacking variety of submitters doesnt bother me, but ill contribute with an idea to give it a more community based feel. If leggie instead of picking one map, picked three/five maps, and letting a public vote decide which run deserves the dollar the most, it would atleast give other climbers hope that maybe their style or creativity would be enough to get the nod.
For me i want to stress though, that i really have enjoyed these challenges and im really happy to see the best kzers getting rewarded in a sort of professional form.

This sounds like a perfect solution for leggie's monthly challenge, at least it would improve jumpers activity and it won't be only one name in competition. But as leggie said, main problem isn't organization but main problem is activity of jumper, besides noone dare to competite with lewly (except gene and glp), is like he prooved he's unbeatable and people are like scared of him.
Pizza's idea might be acceptable, there weren't any cup activites for along and demo release by itself cannot keep kz scene alive always. Personal i more enjoy watching two jumper (it dosen't even matter if they are famous or not) competite between each other and i bet many of you do the same. Kz scene is pretty much alive so we can expect a big amount of jumpers...
cool idea and all scary but people will just vote for their friends/who the like the most

Yea, but that doesn't mean much...

How does it not mean much to you? You do realize it's about choosing the best/fastest record, not your friend/favourite jumper right?
cup = best idea
I hate that kz has come to this, when real life money plays a part in the competition.
Especially now when the anti-hack tools and democheckers are not able to bust the so called "undetectable hacks". Those who possess the hacks could more than easily use them for their advantage to get some easy cash out of it.
50 dollars is serious business.
