Travelling on your own, without friends/family
Hi
I've put alot of thoughts about travelling by myself and since I've read that atleast Moxx have done it I thought also more ppl here on XJ have maybe done it. Anyways, I hope that some experienced dude on this matter could tell me what to think on while travelling alone. I got a few questions, hope I get some answers! :)
1. How's the best way to come in contact with ppl, to go party with etc..?
2. How do you spare your time in the best way when it gets lonley for to long?
3. Travelling destination tips? Please add some shit I should go checkout, historical building for an example ( I got a budget on 1500€ - 2500€, not sure yet)
4. What's your recommended time being away? a week? two weeks?
5. Maybe you could give me some answers on a question that I haven't thought about asking! :)
Hopefully you could help me guys!
Thanks!

I can't say I've been traveling per say but I've been living abroad in two different countries for about a year and a half now. For study/job purposes only so I guess what you want to do is slightly different. But still I guess I can advise you on a few things.
If you want to travel alone to meet new people, discover new things and whatnot, I guess one of the best way is to go bag-packing for a rather long trip (e.g. 3 months minimum). I'm not sure you'll get to know a lot of people by staying only a week or two abroad. It also depends on your social abilities too.
It's also important for you to define the reasons of doing such a trip (whether its a long or short trip). Do you want to party only, do you want to work or volunteer, etc.. That would help you find place(s) you want to visit and kind of help you plan a route (especially if its a short trip, as you don't wanna lose the short time you'd have there).
The best way to get to know new people? Check-in a 10 ppl dorm in a cheap youth hostel. That way you'll meet fellow strangers who experience the same things as you do.
How do you spare your time? As I said it depends on the reasons of your trip and your expectations. Places like South East Asia have loads of options : you can do pretty much everything you want (party hard, chill out, visit places, do unique shit + it's rather cheap).
Friends of mine have also been traveling for a year in Australia volunteering in different farms http://www.wwoof.net/ . That's something you might want to do too if you plan to stay for a long time.

Thanks, I find this very helpful!
I don't know really if I want to get to know the persons that well, just hang out for a few days and then maybe meet up with other persons. I really think that hostel idea of yours is great!
Also thanks for posting the wwoof website! It sounds intresting, maybe a thing I might try out later in life! :)
Got one question about the wwoof thing, do you earn anykind of money while doing this?

Hi,
Thanks for hitting me up via Instagram, I would not have noticed your thread otherwise.
I'll try to share my perspective from my own experience, but I'm sure there are other members who will provide a better advice.
The first things you've got to ask yourself are, and before answering your questions:
- How much money will I have (how much for flight(s)? How much for ho(s)tels? How much for food? How much to the other stuff?)
- Where do I want to go? What do I want to discover? What do I want to see?
- Are both parts matching? Is it possible with my budget?
I stronlgy recommend not going for a trip you can barely afford: sure you will have been able to pay for flights and an hotel, but if you can't do any activity there it's extremely frustrating, and your trip will not be as enjoyable as it could have been.
Now that the previous questions were answered, you should know where you will go. It's time to take plane tickets.
- According to where you're going, you might not need to book an hotel, but we will see that later.
- I mostly use Skyscanner to find a flight, available on iOS or on their website (the iOS app is better then the website btw). But do not hesitate to browse different websites to compare prices
- When you find the flight you want, check directly on the airline's website, sometimes you can find lower fares
- If you're going to New York City, I strongly suggest to book an hotel in advance, if you're going to Bangkok or another Asian country (apart from Korea, Japan and big cities such as Beijing/HK/Singapor) you can just find an hotel there, by getting information on the internet before you departure: you will know in which neighbourhood the best places to sleep are, according to what you're looking for (quality or price)
- If you decide not to book an hotel in advance, keep in mind that it will surely take you a few hours to find a place, a few hours carrying a luggage is not that cool, especially when the weather is hot and sweaty (Bangkok I hate you this), it's exhausting and you might end up in a shitty hotel. But then again that's up to you.
Now I'll try to answer your initial questions:
1. How's the best way to come in contact with ppl, to go party with etc..?
- Going to a youth hostel is often a good option, there's often a lobby where people are spending some time, and they're most of the time pretty open to discussion. You'll easily find cool buddies to hang out with.
- An option I like and often do (if you're single) is talking to a group of girls you don't know in the street (most preferably cute ones), asking for advice (cool spots to visit, cool nightclubs/bars etc...). Then you make the conversation derive to "I'm Yohan btw, I come from France, Paris, nice to meet you". There are high chances they will at least ask you if you want to hang out in a bar or at some random party.
- Always accept random parties invitations: you will meet new people, more possibilities to discover new things, new places etc
- What I like to do is just chatting with people in the street, in most asian countries you can have lunches on the pavement, on small plastic tables and chairs. Talk to people around you, even if they barely speak english, it can lead to pretty funny situations when they invite you to eat at their house with their family etc
- It could sound useless but... Smile! You will look really open to discussion with locals, and they will easily come and talk to you, once again I speak from my own experiences in Asia so it might not be doable everywhere on the planet
2. How do you spare your time in the best way when it gets lonley for to long?
- When you're in a place you don't know and you know no one you can easily get dragged into a situation when you spend your time in your hotel room browsing on the internet. You have to force yourself going outside, even if there is nothing to do. You will end up meeting people (see advice mentioned above) and find something to do or a discover a cool new place to take pictures of.
- Try to benefit from that moment alone to step back and take a look at your country, your customs, the way you live when you're home in your country. Without going too philosophical, it's awesome how traveling can make you grow maturity on some points. There's a high chance you will not come back in the state you left your country, with a definitely different perspective of your world :-)
3. Travelling destination tips? Please add some shit I should go checkout, historical building for an example ( I got a budget on 1500€ - 2500€, not sure yet)
- I think I kind of answered already above :-)
4. What's your recommended time being away? a week? two weeks?
- If you're going far away, 2 weeks is a very minimum, and you will most likely be a bit frustrated at the end of these 2 weeks. I'd suggest 3 weeks minimum, more if possible.
5. Maybe you could give me some answers on a question that I haven't thought about asking! :)
Don't hesitate to ask about anything, I'll keep an eye on the thread and try to answer.
Can't wait to see other member answers and exchange around this subject :-)
Regards,
Yohan
about wwoof: you're volunteering so you don't earn any money. But you live with your host (usually an open minded and friendly family) . You help them with their farms during, for example, a couple of weeks exchange of food and accomodation. It can be really nice, but don't expect to party a lot if you choose to do that.
about the youth hostels: people usually come and go and don't stay there forever. So you'd basically meet new people every week.
also if you travel alone and if you're the shy kind of dude, you will have to really force yourself to go right up to people and talk to them. otherwise you won't have a good time and eventually regret it.

I got few questions about your trip to bangkok!
1. How long did you stay there?
2. What was your budget?
3. Did really some guy invite you to eat with their family? :O
I would really love to see some asian landscapes, that would be really beautiful I think. But I think when I'm travelling alone for the first time i thought maybe some country in Europe to start out with. I mean, I flew for the first time this year in august and that's the only time I have ever flew hehe, can you believe that? :D
The only country I visited outside my belowed Scandinavia is Germany, twice. Once I drove there from Sweden and second time I flew. So yeah I'm not that experienced on this travelling matter, so starting of with something "easy", "small" I think is good idea.
I had Italy, Rome, Netherlands, Amsterdam and Ireland, Dublin in mind. If you got any experince of those or any other country europe, don't hesitate to tell me! :)
Thanks again!

1. How long did you stay there?
2 weeks, that wasn't enough but this is the max my boss allowed me to take.
2. What was your budget?
I'm gonna try to be precise:
I had been working really hard for several months and had spent nothing. I basically had 3000-4000€ for that trip.
- 580€ direct flights from Paris to BKK with Thai Airways (awesome company, awesome plane (Airbus A380)
- 80€ for a week in a Bangkok youth hostel in the center of the city
- 30€ for a round trip train ticket Bangkok - Chiang Mai (1300 km)
- 20€ for 3 nights in a hotel at the center of Chiang Mai
- 300€ for a 80m² appartment in a 5* hotel, 4 nights
Sub-total: 1010€ for transports + hotels
- Restaurants & food/alcohol: ~300€
- Other activities: ~300€
Total: ~1600€
3. Did really some guy invite you to eat with their family? :O
Yeah, I was eating on the pavement in a poor neighbourhood, with locals. We started to chat even if the guy barely spoke english. But he told me to come back the next evening, so I came back and he took me to his house and had a dinner with them. Communication wasn't easy and not precise at all but you can always make people understand basic stuff :-)

About the thing I bolded that sounds great and I'm not a shy at all so that won't be a problem! :)

1. How's the best way to come in contact with ppl, to go party with etc..?
Pretty much just talk to random people, I don't mean stop random people on the street.. But there's always people around that you can talk to. I mean if you're in Vegas you can just sit on the curb drinking a beer admiring the view and at the same time just talk to some other guys chilling.
What's good about traveling alone is that you get out of your comfort zone, in a good way.
If you travel with a friend or a group of friends, it's usually like you're in this bubble, not many outside people can penetrate it, and it's basically like hanging out at home, even though you're someplace else.. If you're alone, it's way easier just randomly talking to people, mainly because of the fact there's no one else you can talk too.
Other than that I mean.. just hit the pubs.. talk to cashiers, just whatever really.. Somethings gonna come up that you can do! Talked to people online from that area? Go see em for lunch?
2. How do you spare your time in the best way when it gets lonley for to long?
Do your research, what do you wanna see?
Category 1: Things you absolutely want to see, and can't miss.
Category 2: Things you want to see but wouldn't regret if you didn't.
Category 3: Things you don't really wanna see but could do it to have seen it.
I don't know what kind of person you are since you didn't clarify if you wanted to do a booz and cruise or watch monuments or slack at the hotel bar and pool..
3. Travelling destination tips? Please add some shit I should go checkout, historical building for an example ( I got a budget on 1500€ - 2500€, not sure yet)
Wait you don't have any clue where to go? This is your trip, not mine.
But I don't know, Italy? Amsterdam is chill, also has the best airport in my opinion (Schiphol).
I'm usually the road-trip guy, don't like being bound to a local hotel or using expensive cabs.
4. What's your recommended time being away? a week? two weeks?
All depends on your destination, and what you want to do. You breeze through cities pretty quickly if you're interested in 'em. So I would recommend not overbooking something, very hard to get money back from a hotel if you decide you wanna leave earlier. Thing about pretty much anywhere there's so many places relatively close that you can see, and it's cheaper once you're out there, rather to travel from your hometown to new places.
What I mean is that, (if it was unclear) that for example you go to Amsterdam, then Rotterdam is pretty close and doesn't cost alot of money to get to from Amsterdam, but from Åland to Amsterdam, then back to Åland then Rotterdam.. Will be one expensive trip(s).
5. Maybe you could give me some answers on a question that I haven't thought about asking! :)
Most important thing is not to overbook yourself, locking yourself in one place. Like I said earlier you breeze through the cities pretty quickly if you wanna see other stuff, if you're the type of guy that wants to stay a long time in each city or the place you travel to, then by all means book as long as you feel.
Also don't try to be cheap on the shit you wanna see and do, you'll regret it later. And chances are you wont go back since you visited it once. Going back to see one thing you regret not doing isn't easy. Living cheap to have more money to do stuff you want to do, is sometimes a good choice. Even though I personally like the privacy you get with living alone. There's of course a way to compromise this, in a way stay a few days at a hostel then take one or two nights a hotel to freshen up.. Relax, have a private shower. It's easy finding cheap hotels/motels just a bit outside the city. (Usually requires a car for your own convenience) even though most places have good bus communications to hotels.
Force yourself to go out, sitting in a hotel all day isn't fun and you WILL regret it, I promise you. It doesn't matter what you do.. just walk down the street, something will come up that sparks your interest.
Last but not least, going alone is fun at times, but having a friend with you makes things a bit more fun, because you have someone that you know to talk to. You can share the same dorm but do different things, if he's a bar guy and you wanna go see a church.. You don't need to be with each other all the time. It can be hard to find someone that does the exact same stuff as you, and some people might be clingy and wanna hang out all the time, but remember:
You do this trip for YOU, not for anyone else. See the stuff you want to see!
come to ltu its cheap its hipe its everything u could want huehue

Regarding your answer I bolded up is that this trip won't be off soon I still got money to earn and I have to straight up my mind about going to the army! And since I haven't travelled that much (only been to germany) so I thought maybe you guys could share your experiences of different countrys you visited and liked the best and then it's up to me to check it up and decide if it's sounds any intresting to me! I don't want you guys to decide my trip, just wanted to have some tips of what you may have liked.
I love that you guys writes so much also, alot of tips is given! :)

Depends on what do you want to do. If you're looking for alcohol tourism, your budget is surely more than enough for a whole summer (3-4 months) in Sunny Beach, Bulgaria - cheap booze, cheap (free) girls, sand, sea, parties.
It is visited by thousands of Scandinavians and Russians.
I personally would never go there.
