Shock: for the record, I totally agree. IRC was an excellent and powerful tool for communication in communities. The problem is people are too stupid these days to bother learning how it works. I tried to run a computer science group project over a freenode IRC channel, and 22 year old's currently studying computer science were too lazy/spoiled to figure out IRC well enough to properly use it to communicate regularly in an avenue in which it directly effected their grade in a course they were paying out the ass for. There were too many codes, to much technical knowledge required, (what do you mean I have to navigate my IRC client to an IRC url? This doesn't just work with one click? What the heck is account validation?). I have very little hope for some teenage newbie to this community.

The big issue is, with running an IRC channel you isolate the community into in groups and out groups. I mean, that used to be the case before, but before it was largely people who cared enough to pick this channel as one of the ones they idle, vs people who don't. Where as now it's going to be people who are old enough or smart enough to know/figure out how to use IRC vs people who aren't. The former group are more of a minority than they used to be.

By enlarge people expect things to be easy, even if they're giving up 95% of the power they would have if they were willing to try a little harder and learn a little bit more.

Well you're kinda digging it too deep. My idea of reviving irc is basically a kz dwelling channel which is used by anyone anytime for anything, starting of chit-chats and ending with game related questions.. well basically how it always used to be. That's the point. You don't really need to know ANYTHING other than how to join the server. With the desire stuff can be added, which likely means more complications but in end you are right, people seem to have hardship attempting basic stuff that requires nothing but a little bit of logic as we've seen it from irc cups for example.

I feel like were just around the corner of a billion dollar empire. Revive IRC, but make it a little bit more dweeb friendly. The masses will flood!
