Since the news post will eventually go away I thought that we would go with the thread dicussing everything that relates to the project.

I've got quite a lot going on in my head right now but I'm not intending to propone everything, just most important things regarding basics.

First of all, as we still didn't figure out yet, is there anyone who can answer if such complexity and size even possible to map in cs 1.6? As the news post says at least 5 areas for different activities will be there, but I think there's gotta be more.

> swimming pool
> tracks (probably a couple of them for different distances)
> longjumping area (probably a couple of them as well for different techniques)
> obstacle course race (probably a couple of them again)
> ski jump

Now you have a rough clue of the caliber of the work that is going to be made. So is it fittable at all in one room? Or should it not be one room? Maybe teleports to each area will make a thing.

Also, should it be a live contest or offline? If it's first then I suggest that there needs to be some sort of transparent wall next to you that opens up whenver the trigger is pulled, to start the battle. This is a good solution to avoid false starts if the case is "no-press" timer rather "press-timer".

Would it also be possible to make several timers for each course that jumper goes separately from others (if we're still talking about live tournament)?

Also, as this project seems to attract a lot of people and will probably be a real fun map to play outside the tournament why not supplement it with lj room and as I said in comments maybe even make it an official map for recording longjumping?

That's some basic stuff to kick it off.

Discuss.

Well i belive you can make all in just 1 bsp..but will just be ugly imo
-There will be always the same sky for every part
-You cant focus on just 1 area to make it very nice and detailed to really look like an Olympic place.
The parts for running, swimming, longjumping etc ->can be assigned to some mapper who is voted by users to make a part :)
Dont know, hope more replies will be :)

Hello, i was talking with PU9 and he told me to share my ideas here so

Probably most people agree that making one big map (stadium) is the solution. And because the size is limited by engine, all disciplines can´t actually fill into the stadium only, so we have to put them somewhere else. Here are few possibilites:
ps. sry for my Paint skills

1)Tower stadium
A high tower building, which u can´t see from outside, some disciplines in each floor and on the top floor open air stadium with nice view to the skies.
Note: each stadium means a moderate size stadium, which engine can handle (talking about +-2000 wpolys)

http://screenshot.cz/BFQ5Q/
If not tower, same variation is the stadium on ground with floors in underground.

2)“Flattened ring stadium“
A stadium with kind of flattened ring around it, where are disciplines separated by walls.

http://screenshot.cz/IYSSV/

3)Universal stadium (normal stadium with replaceable .bsp file)
A stadium, where you can fill as many disciplines as engine allows ( same like others) , but here you can´t add more stuff somewhere else. Instead, before each tournament- lets say each 3 months- disciplines are updated, new ones added, old replaced- similar to Crossfit games. For example there would be like X regular disciplines which are played each Games and Y disciplines changeable-changed every tournament for new ones. While actual disciplines would look very simple in terms of mapping- some start/finish lines, needed entities etc, nothing big- imagine them like tools or equipment. The stadium itself would be beautiful already.. Each tournament the .bsp file would got updated or new map version with different name would be added (xj_games1,games2 etc) so everyone could download it and start practise with- lets say- one month in advance news annoucement.

I personally like the third option the most for its flexibility, ppl can make up new ideas so disciplines would be inovating each time

ShoCk: "no-press" timer walls as trigger_multiple performed on those two cosy maps:
https://cosy-climbing.net/maps.php/3077/klz_venual/
https://cosy-climbing.net/maps.php/3243/rnr_speedcrag/

hi every one :)

Hey bluemagic! I knew that there was this kind of timer implemented somewhere out there but what does trigger_multiple stand for and what walls? :D Is it by chance something that appeals to using several timers on a map? Great if so.

@Roadrunner. All ideas are great. However, I didn't quite get the last one. Are you suggesting that the thing about it is that it is modifiable? Can't you apply it to 1 and 2 just as easily? What do I not understand?

Roadrunner mapper01/09/2014 00:30

Yes exactly, modifiable. And yes, you can apply that to 1 and 2. I figured out you actually have to put some stuff somewhere else cause the stadium itself can hold only 1-2 events while allowing players good fps so yeah.I started something already + one cool guy working on plugins too :D

to bad mappers cant map together in the same time on some website or something ;s gl

8bo, post that link you sent me a couple of months ago.
I think It'll help some mappers understand a lot of basic things, such as how wide a track should be and how long it should be. the VERY hardest thing to build in hammer would be the start lines for each runner.

Oh ps: 1 unit = 1 inch.

Well i dont know why more ppl (mappers) not posting their thoughts here, seems like nobodys really interested.

You mean basic things connected with actual disciplines (width, length of lines)?
And the timer thing is actually pretty easy.

thats not quite the hardest part. the hardest part would be to create an olympic stadium which is quite stable and playable. with such an idea you can hit very fast the goldsrc limit

BacoN01/09/2014 13:14

sounds like a good idea for kzmod

use the stats given for reference, scaling in some way using units
source: http://www.mathsisfun.com/activity/olympic-athletics-track.html
most of the other stuff is easier i guess

[didn't read thread sorry if i'm repeating anything]:
Yeah napz who made a cool 100m sprint map that we had some fun on one time, we had 8 players running 100m races to see who won. The first to the end of their lane triggered anyone still in their lane to get slayed, or something like that. There was also a LAN version with a timer (fastest time recorded was 13.72)

Good luck mappers

This is totally possible for sure: I have seen a lot of football pitches on cs 1.6

I dont understand how Roadrunner and kqbmig [who i belive are mappers:) ] said things like there is a way to make such map for 1.6 and be a cool map ..:/
demolite is only1 that understands as i can see.. that you cant actually make a fking large map like this with dozens of "sports" and not hit a limit somewhere....
I already said..if you want an Olympic ..best way make piece by piece using more bsp to have a very good possibility to look good and entertaining way to play ..

BacoN said a good thing there...short and directly :) this kind of thing of Stadium can be made only in the better engine games...
I cant really say much about others that dont understand the Hammer and came with sketches or a imaginiary thing that would be lovely to really be possible to be created :) Very nice from you trying...hope some1 like spr1n or some1 really good that understands the Hammer will say it clearly that just is not possible such thing:)

Roadrunner mapper01/09/2014 19:07

Spider1 I understand the engine and what limits are, big olympic stadium with all disciplines inside of course is not possible as many think..thats why i suggested that kind of smaller stadium (which can handle 1 big event) with side areas where would other events be). Olympic games on goldsource not possible? Totally disagree, but we have to tighten our belts and use imagination. I would just dont call it Olympic games since we cant simply affort the atmosphere, but XJ games or smt similar (smaller). Anyways many real disciplines arent convertible to cs ,for example theres no stamina so many endurance races are irelevant.Theres only strength which we can convert to strafes/strafe technique, precision and timing.

My only idea here:
http://i.imgur.com/eD1M8lm.png

map file

With cup system it would work good (requires restat each run match)

PsYxOpAt mapper01/09/2014 20:50

@spider. such map is possible, but there isn't many people who can do this.

@demo. using the new features from vluzacn's tools like the copy model could save a lot of precache models. so the only problem is the open space, which will cause bad fps.

Spider1 mapperlj record holder Tournament #301/09/2014 21:06(edited 01/09/2014 21:07)

Yes,Stanimir perhaps is possible..but tell me that you will be able to focus on details for every "sport" things around..dont know how "arena"/"stadium" could be...but to make just a "room" for a sport you will need to use alot of different things this sport has and means something for it...just take a look at this picture only http://www.cstrike-planet.com/maps?img=11719
Just this room for Swimming to make here on 1.6 is quite alot to make...I just dont belive when you say all sports can be made in just 1 bsp:P..seriosly..u should know that a sky and same light for every room of sports is just bad!!
Giving the sky away a bit...after you make such beutiful rooms in 1.6 [lets say like 4-5] you will already reach the fking noclip what is very annoying...More than this probably will be better to use different texture for every sports/room...so there you go more texturedata...you want some hd texture to look better this huge map? go for not scaled texture and kind of big 256...oh..wait the AllBlock is going to fast....where we put the Big room that sends you to all those sports/room? nowhere cuz is not possbile after you try to make the sports :((

As much as i would love such map..is just not possible Psyxo :D i mean it is ..but sry will be ugly and does not worth to try when you already know that you just cant make such idea real in 1.6 :)

:P
