Design or Game-play? What do you prefer?
So I was looking around in the "most beaten" maps in the WR list and I noticed that the short, speedy maps with kind of simple design etc where the ones most played, but still there are super fun maps being denied nowadays because of "too simple design" and I ask myself, why the **** would you do that? If people enjoy playing maps like goldbhop or coldbhop, why not accept more maps like this?
So... what does the community think about this? Design over game-play or game-play over design?
gameplay over design for all kinds of games
Actually when I see little map I dont even want to try overtaking wr time cuz u must be extremely lucky and having skills to beat it, so people are more likely to play longer maps.
gameplay wins
edit: to elaborate, we spend most of the time mindlessly geeking and restarting. Looks are good the first few times, but when you get into "geekmode" none of it matters.
Both are important, but gameplay is more important. As with anything, there has to be a good balance.
@sooshka not everyone who plays the map will be trying to geek it, so having 100% gameplay and 0% design would be bad for the non-geekers, so again there must be a balance
from people i've ever known typically anyone who is competitive is like 75/25 gameplay/design and anyone who is a casual gamer wants more of a 50/50 split, even weighted towards design sometimes depending on what the game is about
deffo the gameplay
gameplay over design all day erry day

This so much.
And yeah Nikita, these recent denials are bullshit imo. holy_lame is a real fun map with fun gameplay, they said it's not creative whatsoever while the map has all the slides, duckjumps, ladderjumps and surely more to the list. I wonder if the map admins even played the map, because stating that it has simple jumps "ETC...", which is ridiculous for a reason, is totally inaccurate. I appreciate that there are still people out there who are willing to invest their spare time for the community but some decisions they take are easily attackable.
Please, reconsider.
I will tell you only 1 thing guys.
If xj were to accept those maps you are referring to such
as "holy_lame" and similar ones, there wouldb e more than 500 maps that would've been submitted to XJ just from CC, yo guys think is easy to be a map admin or awhatever and lay back and wait for maps to be released ...
don't you prefer the community to be served original deserved maps with a great gameplay and good theme/interesting jumps/etc? like i said if it was all about the gameplay this would've been worse than CC here.
Peace.
Karli is right about encouraging new maps rather than transfering cosy's mapbase to xj.
As for the topic, gameplay all the way.
I like when the mapper has enough knowledge to make a map in a very simplicity way, not because he is lack of skill but he just wants to create detailed minimalism on purpose. CC short maps are negligent compared to XJ short maps.
I argue too much.. but karli, cosy doesn't really have too many popular maps, just a handful afaik and holy_lame happens to be one them. The map DOES have great gameplay and interesting jumps, otherwise there's nothing really to value and we wouldn't be talking now. It may be lacking theme or beaty but it's certainly not that ugly.
You think you know what's best for the community but you're posting in the thread where almost every post contradicts your point.
