[HELP shooting-star] -> high CPU usage

Hey guys,

I've been struggling with high CPU usage of our beloved game for years. Since I am not able to solve this problem by myself, I ask you here for advice or tips how to fix the issue.

High CPU usage starts in launched cs1.6 even by just being in lobby without any action. Playing the game does not affect the CPU load in noticeable way.

Previous laptop: i5 5200 (2 cores), AMD Radeon R5
CPU usage: ~45%

Current laptop: i5 7300 (4 cores), NVIDIA GTX 1050
CPU usage: ~60%

Few possible (maybe improbable) causes:
- I use 60Hz screens (laptop + external)
- antimalware/firewall (tried several solutions, didn't work)

Thank you for advice, ideas or any kind of help :)

Try this:
Start > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > Processor power management > Maximum processor state, and set it to 99% or 98%

tried, nothing changed. Thanks anyways.

In general, the CPU performance is good at any time. Something that doesn't need to be computed is loading the CPU

cpu usage in 1.6 for me is 50% when im in the game, its normal
i have an i5 4460
lately google chrome is using a lot of my cpu so i have to close it in order to play any games. i dont think you have a problem there, just check other programs running in the background and stressing the cpu. btw whats the problem you have? RE7 used to have my cpu running at 98%

core2duo - 10%, i5 - 50%? Others have consumption way under 10% using i5s ;)

monitor stats using msi afterburner.. minimized/maximized cs isnt the same. i believe 50% its ok for 1.6

being in lobby should not excessively load the CPU. Any ideas? :)

I think new processors don't like cs too much. I have i7-4710HQ and it eats about 30% of the CPU while in lobby.
CS 1.6 was always a CPU hungry game, if you don't get fps drops or the CPU heats up too much, you should not worry about this...

At my level, a slight increase in amount of pike drops increase causes the game not being so enjoyable anymore... The fact that it consumes power of more than 2 cores is terrifying

Has it been always like that or did it get worse over the years? Just on these two laptops? What operating systems did you use? Does anything change after hours of running?

I have never played cs on win8 or above, so I might not be a great help, but certainly doesn't sound normal.

There are several things you can try and see if there are any differences:
Counter-Strike beta (unlikely, but worth a try)
Turn off steam overlay.
Set cstrike.exe cpu affinity to a single core (in task manager)
Set Steam and/or steam overlay affinity to a single core

Tried all, the affinity decreases the total load (obviously), but the game becomes laggy. Thanks anyways , every new approach brings hope :)

rekt, indian sysadmin scammer

ontopic:
I have been using the laptop + external 60hz setup for years before getting a desktop and I used to have affinity checked on all but the first (0) thread back on windows 8.0 until it got patched (also note that i had dual graphics card with the integrated intel graphics which seemed to cause a lot of trouble with older games like 1.6). Also try disabling superfetch and windows search services through windows services (these are proven to speed things up a notch on latest win10 versions and older win8.1 versions around patch 56xxx).

If nothing else seems to work, try running a VM as a debugging enviroment with older system as win7 and see if anything changes that could be software related.

Thanks, no success has been achieved so far. I will go for linux now and let know how that worked :)

well i got 45-55% cpu usage on cs with a i5 6600k so i dno, if it isnt causing any obvious issues then it doesnt matter

however i did have issues on my laptop before with fps in cs and i used some software that made cs run using the main GPU instead of the CPUs own graphics

an obvious issue is that i cant record jumpbugs without stable 100fps
