This tutorial show u how to make a fan that cast shadows. Entities dont cast shadows so we have to fake it.

1. First make ur fan.

2. Then put a brush with the texture "origin" in the middle of it (this show the engine what the fan will rotate on)

3. Then select the fan and the originbrush and press (ctrl+t) to tie it to an entity, select func_rotating.

These are the properties/flags u need to set:

Properties
Rotation speed: How fast the fan will rotate. 200 is a good value.
Fan sounds: How the fan will sound. Select a sound that fit ur fan.
Volume: How loud the fan will be. 0 is silent, and 10 is loud

Flags
Start ON: The fan start when the map start, If u have this on OFF u will need to trigger the fan to make it rotate.
X-axis: The fan rotate around the X-axis
Y-axis: The fan rotate around the Y-axis
Not Solid: U can walk through the fan with this flag checked.

Remember that EVERYTHING that rotate needs a originbrush in the center.

4. Then we need to add some more details like light.

The texture that are used is Fade2 (avaible in halflife.wad) and Null (the blue texture). This will simulate the light coming down from the sky/lamp/whatever thats above the fan. Make sure that its originbrush is straight below the fans originbrush. Also tie this to func_rotating with the same settings as the fan.

5. Now its only the shadow left, the highlight of the tutorial. Simply copy the fan-brush and make it 1 unit high, apply the texture "BLACK", put it on the ground under the fan and give it the same properties as the fan (ignore putting any sound to this one), and set the rendermode to texture, and fx amount to 100. Dont forget to check the flag; Not Solid (u cant walk upon shadows :P)

Here is the final result:

nice tuto
btw, for your part 5, you can make a texture for simulate the fan shadow. If you search an maximum optimisation, the texture it will be better
