This Video-Tutorial shows you how to render your Movie with SONY VEGAS using the .wmv Codec.

I used the Trial of Sony Vegas 6.0 cause some parts are different (well, maybe not, somebody told me to w/e).

Rendering as a .wmv is definately not the best solution, but its simple and the quality is pretty good.

Have fun.

Didn't watch the tutorial but just two screenshots are enough I think. I use these settings for WMV encoding and I think they're really good. 30 mb / 1 min + nice quality:

Wth is the point of this post, what about a reason ?

The quality is hot, well, the filesize isn't the smallest but its still not bad.

You can get great quality with a small file size with wmv

put framerate to 80 or what is max i dont remember , so you get ultra-smooth movie

please make sure you know what you're talking about joel...

bkZ|psh29/06/2008 15:21

wmv = low size + high quality(if you know how to compress well), oddysseus you fail Sry

agree

The best thing for high quality and lower file size is actually h264... I agree with OddYsseus, no one uses wmv anymore because it just sucks.

bkZ|psh29/06/2008 18:07(edited 29/06/2008 18:09)

kiddie comment arrived "becouse it just sucks". You don`t even know why it sucks but still say it becouse someone else did, sad thing :) visit some mm portal and see how much of the new movies with nIce quality and not so large size are *.wmv . later

prof. chosen29/06/2008 19:07

h264 needs a better pc for playback. and for wmv u dont need any extra codec n stuff. wmv is like the "allround codec", because everyone can play it and because its not so big.

.STyLeZ29/06/2008 19:55

You need the wmv codec.

s1gh29/06/2008 22:35

Oh please bkZ|psh, give me a break. Just because I didn't feel like elaborating doesn't mean I don't know why it sucks.

I was actually a little misleading in my post, because you can't compare h264 and wmv. h264 is a codec and wmv is a container...

Anyway, wmv DOES suck. It's a proprietary Microsoft standard that doesn't really allow a lot of the cool stuff that containers like Matroska offer. And everyone hates Microsoft anyway. Avi is also a Microsoft container, but at least it allows to use better codecs (xvid) than crap like WMV9 and VC-1.

H264 is awesome because it's the most efficient codec out there. It's possible to have better quality at a certain filesize than another codec with h264.

And chosen, come on. >_>
99% of the people have computers that are good enough to play h264, and it's not hard at all to install the extra codec. Either download the CCCP pack or use VLC if you're lazy.
And wmv is not an "all around codec", it's a container.

Theres no need to have a better quality in CS, the quality of wmv is just great, so wtf are you complaining about.
And no, i don't hate Microsoft.

Correction: wmv is a container, a encoder and a decoder
h264 is a encoder and mp4, mkv or avi are the containers

s1gh29/06/2008 23:18

STyLeZ, that's just a stupid thing to say. If you don't care about the quality of the movie then what's the point anyway. Microsoft sucks btw.

And raver, wmv is a container. WMV9 and VC-1 are typically the codecs used in wmv...
h264 is a codec, and Matroska (mkv) is usually the container, mp4 is used sometimes too (especially when an x264 codec is used).
You can use avi as a container for h264, but it's considered extremely evil, it's just too old to support it well.

By the way, codec = "device or program capable of encoding and/or decoding" (wikipedia).

st0ka29/06/2008 23:50

s1gh you're in the position of someone who makes movies (probably encodes them as well) or just knows something about codecs? wmv9 is great because of it's ease. .STyLeZ also started this thread to show this tut for encoding in VEGAS. If you have the possibility (HDD space) to export your final footage as uncompressed video file you'll try XviD, mp4, h264, MPEG etc. of course. But the encoding settings can be a bit tricky sometimes (well I'm not talking about CS movies. They usually ain't hard to encode) especially when you're dealing with h264 and mp4. Also encoding in another program (excluding the one you use for editing) may take a lot more time.

So if you don't have the opportunity to encode in XviD, mp4 etc. wmv9 is just great.
