first off i want to know WHY DONT I GET A BIG FIRST JUMP ?!?!
i've seen the long jump guide and nuke one also . but i still dont get my first Hop as high as the one in vid . is there a prob in server's gravity ?

second i want to know after first hop in air do i have to move mouse at a certain angle to maintain the speed ? for ex. i jump and i press D + move mouse to righ ( how much should i move ) and what's the time duration ?

can someone plz help .. ? x)

You're thinking about it totally the wrong way.

First of all, I can all but guarentee you that you are getting the same jump height that everyone else is, the reason that they can make the jump and you cannot is simply because they are jumping farther, and thus at the point where they hit the landing they have a greater height because they haven't been falling as long yet.

First of all to understand longjumping you need to understand that in counterstrike you don't always move exactly the same speed when you run on the ground. Watch the longjump tutorial video and pay close attention to what the jumper is doing before he takes off. This is what we call the prestrafe. The way it works is that in HL your movement is calculated with a virtually infinate maximum accelleration and clamped to force you to stay the same speed. The clamp however is run on based on efficientcy and doesn't update every second, so if you change direction quickly while on the ground you temporarily gain a small ammount of speed. The prestrafe does this in two ways. Firstly you hold your movement keys diagonally before you take off, this allows you to gain the slight movement advantage from this, and additionally, as you leave the ground you rapidly stroke your mouse towards the same direction you are strafing, this causes a directional change that prevents the clamp from effectively slowing your groundspeed down just before you take off. Make sure you jump when you are sped up as much as possible so you don't have to do as much work once you get airborn.

Second thing you need to understand is exactly what happens when you move in the air. In HL if you are in the air and hold a directional key you accelerate in that direction slightly, as well as it being impossible to move in the opposite direction. This is why when you jump and hold d while moving the mouse right your player moves towards the center of the screen rather than drifting like he does when you aren't holding the d key. What you might not know is that when you do this motion you also accelerate, meaning a higher total airspeed. So what does this mean? The more you can strafe and scroll in the same direction the higher your airspeed is getting, meaning a longer jump. That being said think about if you want to run a slalom, the closer to the flags you get the more directly towards your destination you are moving so the shorter time it will take you to get there. So if you get lots of ministrafes into your jump you are moving more directly to your destination while at the same time you have the advantage of all the extra air speed you rack up from the strafejump movement. Combine all these things perfectly and you have a very very long longjump, however this is easier said then done so just practice getting as many ministrafes in as you can handle and getting a good prestrafe and the better you get at both of them the more consistantly you will be able to make the jump.

For speed of the strafe while you are doing ministafes try to get as fast as you can. You are WAY more likely to go slower then optimum then faster then optimum, and if you can get faster then optimum you likely won't have a hard time ajusting when you start to get the feel of what the optimum speed is. For the time duration the short answer is as short as possible. The more ministrafes you get the more directly you are moving towards your landing. However, if you accidentally strafe the opposite way of your mouse movement you lose ALOT of airspeed, so you need to go only so fast that you don't introduce inperfections into your strafes on accident. Good strafers get really really fast at this and can get lots of ministrafes, but you should start off only trying for 2 or 3.

One last thing, always make sure you duck just as you hit the landing of a longjump, and not during the duration of the jump. You get ALOT less airspeed from your air movements when you are ducked, so you need to wait until the last possible second before you land to duck or you are wasting airstrafe time.

well pres D and turn the mouse to right and you will feel the needed duration :) when i was try my first time i haved the same prob :D i'm asure you will feel the needed duration

good question, ive been kzing for a while now and i have no idea how the fuck some ppl make 250 with knife

i guess you just need talent for long jumping :(

lagster mapper16/05/2006 06:44

when i first started long jumping, i was terrible, its all in practice, but what i used to do was JUST prestrafe lol with just a prestrafe u can at least get 235 units :P

Was 235 just something you guessed or is it really possible to jump 235 with prestrafe? I don't really know but I don't think you get further than 225 with _only_ prestrafe.

faker mapper16/05/2006 14:02

i moved it to the right forum (Jump Talk).

hf discussing it

btw shozab there is absolutely no universal answer on how to strafe properly. You just have to find your own little strafing technique and continue improving that technique until you land the REALLY hard jumps (250+)

But don't let failure discourage you. If you miss the 240 for example, that's no reason to say "Dang I suck I should probably just give up". Just keep trying.

lagster mapper17/05/2006 03:39

ichirou yeah i know that cause thats what i got with just a prestrafe back in the day, i know for sure that 230 with just a prestrafe is pretty easy :/ i guess thats just from memory il have a try later :P

matty18/05/2006 21:26

yeah i seen a guy do the 235 long jump on kz_cfl_jost with only prestrafe. There must be something really wrong with me, coz my best prestrafe and multistrafe combo produced 231 units (3 strafes), and boy it was really smooth. From what i hear to get 235 with prestrafe you have to use the move forward button as well, and i dont know htf to do this. There are also issues like how does your fps affect the jump, how good is your mouse, what should your mouse sensitivity be. Im at 3.0 sensitivity and have to do a lot of work with the mouse to get 3 strafes in :( . Its really annoying coz i can 0 check about 150 maps, and ive been at this a long time, the only maps i cant do are ones with 230+ long jumps in them. H3h3 just did kz_man_everest on 0 checks today, most of the ljers cant do this so thats some consolation.

if your definition of prestrafe is strafing before you hit the jump button.. there's no way you can do 235.. so define "prestrafe"

FikoN19/05/2006 00:13

I think he's talking about the prestrafe on the ground and the first strafe in-air that comes with the prestrafe.

gangien mapper19/05/2006 22:43

which is prestrafe+1 strafe, which is my point lol

electron22/05/2006 16:17

Great answer SwiftSpear, opened my eyes a litte... =)

Just want to add a little thing. If you run up a ladder you can see the difference from running straight up and using the strafe button aswell. Goes a lot faster.

As for prestrafe, not sure about this but i read it is possible to do 237 units with only prestrafe. (perfect prestrafe though).

And i got a question. When you airstrafe, do you just tap the strafe buttons, or hold them down until you switch? Wanna make sure i do the right thing =)

And last, when you bhop, press strafe just before you jump, as you jump or after?

well if you use 7 or 8 airstrafes i think there's no way to hold the strafe keys down cause u need to change them so fast :D

SwiftSpear23/05/2006 10:58

Optimally you are holding the strafe key for the full duration of your mouse's movement in the corrisponding direction. Like n!ght says though, as your strafes become very rapid that duration decreases dramatically, so you end up feeling like you're hammering the strafe keys since you can't get caught holding the opposite strafe key as your mouse move or you will stop sharp.

Think of doing strafejumps around angles. You're doing exactly the same principle you're just using your strafes to increase your straight line speed rather then using them to get around an obstical that is preventing you from doing the jump in a straight line.

even 240 is possible with only prestrafe !dodge

eiRa mapper06/06/2006 22:11

would u say fps makes a big difference to how far u can jump? is it much harder to make 240 units with 40 fps than 240 with 100fps?
