Want some questions answered :)
the most important point for a compression is the observer. a compression based on the characteristics of the human and human eye. its the sense of a good compression to not see any quality lost for HUMANS. but for further edition in programms it doesnt work
400 hlae
400 vdm
400 vegas -> compile to 40 uncompressed -> vdm codec compression
my computer can not support 400 fps in vegas, so i use 80 fps video files for eddit only (and 400 for final compression) : http://xtreme-jumps.eu/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?162218
I think its better to make a uncompressed video first at all, and make the codec compression + add audio, in vdm.
first reason : -During the vegas compression, the image blending rendering is taking care of the COMPRESSED images (codec) so the final result give a mostly pixelized video, for the same bitrate.
-Doing a uncompressed video first, the codec compression will take care of the "PURE" images, for the codec compression.
second reason : vegas can not encode to xvid+mp3 (the mp3 has been blocked by sony then used with xvid, maybe because they wanna sell their own "sony mp3 codec" (and not the free Lame program)
Take care of this only for xvid (x264/mp4 audio is not mp3, but ACC)

8ball, sure this is a possible way. But my computer is really old too and I use another way to test effects with normal fps.
1. Edit an effect
2. Make a loop region around the effect like + - 1 second
3. Set the preview window on "preview half"
4. Set playback loop region
5. Press play.
So this part is played all the time. Vegas calculates every frame and if your pc is slow it cant calculate on normal speed. But after some time vegas has all frames saved and shows it without laggs! This is my way to check out effects without rendering
as much fps as possible in game
set the fps in virtual dub just same liike in cs
vegas 40 FPS and x264 codec and should be HQ ;)
and... the resolution is verry important for quality, use max, i use 1920x1080, 500 fps and my quality is good
hope i helped. HF moviemaking
rendering to the final file with over 60 fps is ridiculous, and if using a big rezolution also, this woud lagg for alot of the viewers with bad video cards, like me
