d3d is always easier on the system, but i would have thought with all the stringent cfg rules, only opengl would be allowed.

i think vista 64 might be a problem because thats notorious for poor driver support, so if possible i'd try an older version on xp. if that doesn't work... i'm out of ideas.

64bit OS versions are BETTER than 32 bit versions! trust me on this one... and theres no such thing as bad driver support for 64 bit... maybe if you have video cards made in nepal or some shit... but not nvidia or ati. same goes for other drivers...
64bit versions are more stable, faster and more secure than 32bit versions and thats a fact!

i dont deny 64 bit is better, i wish i had it with my extra 2gb of ram im not using. but at least near the release, vista 64 bit had a world of problems with even the simplest drivers. ati might outsource to nepal, i'm not really sure lol

also you need to respect that the goldsrc engine is nearly 11years old.

The limit on Goldsource arent that high so you can get with alot of brush work which goes up over 1,5k wpolys, it is still playable, but after the wpolys are getting over 2,5k the engine can't really handel that much. Even when there are models added which will raise the epolys for around 1k it will be lately unplayable. Because the engine wasn't build to have such limits.

Agree. Also, switching to 64-bit gave me a cool fps boost :)
