Longjumping loosing its entity for good
To me, Longjumping is a prestraf + strafs and came out in summer 2004 when the first map came with LJ blocks (kz_man_riverside - 2004/05/31)
Before that summer, every jumpers didn't even know what a prestraf here and were just climbing with 1-2, sometimes 3 strafs because they already knew the strafs since it's present in most of the fps games from the 90's, so basically, for me, they weren't longjumping since the prestraf wasnt found yet (but making W prestrafs seemed pretty cool lol!).
The climb maps from the famous Kreedz started 3years before, in 2001, that's why for me, longjumping didn't start anything but mostly Climbing started all this (see how the older maps are all big mountains or giant beans ^^)
EDIT: about the de_maps, even the big rock on de_nuke wasn't made before 2004, so it's still 3years late after climbing.
About a list of the best ljs, i'm ok with it, as i'm ok with making a list on all wrs in the wesbite, even a long one, because it would make a better ladder (currently someone who have 1wr on a forgotten map is better than someone that is 50 times 2nd in the world in maps;\) but it's impossible because of the lenght and the cheaters and so the time to check the demos, and i understand this:\.
I may be not playing CS since 2001 or 2002, but this is what I think: A prestrafe is meant to gain [or lose if bad key timing] speed before jumping. Every time you run before doing any king of jump, you do the prestrafe no matter where, no matter how far. And if U add at least one strafe [ be it shitty or smth ] it's already called longjump. And what I mean by distance isn't always just straight jump from A to B, it can also be an U-jump, because you also have to jump the said distance to land on an edge. And the bunnyhops can also be considered as longjumping- every time you make a jump, you are also making the prestrafe for the next jump and ofcourse in the air, u do the strafes, so this also can be considered as longjumping. So in my opinion, the longjumping in CS appeared before Climb.

+1 dude... all so wanted to add that u practicly prestrafe and strafe every jump it may be 209 units or 280 its still the same concept u may do it on a climb map on every little block 1000 times in a run or on a specialy desined map it makes no difference LJ CJ DCJ BJ WJ Strafe Jumps are all the same conecpt Prestrafe +Jump so i disagree with you Vee >_< since you got a pre and a strafe in every jump exep when u just scroll up and stay in 1 place ... And if you go back to the days when supa made 240 block you will see most of the sc's made today would be "imposible" .. i cant get why u dont put in more time in to the longjumping section when these guys geeking 10000000 times a single block .. show you what is posible and what is not so you can go to a map and see a jump 260 units and say its Ez x_X
But if we speak about climb as coming before longjumping then we must decide whether the getting from A to B is or is not climb. For example, boosting. I suppose the first players didn't know that syncing their A and D's with mouse can increase the jumped distance so they jumped only straight, but these players may have already known how to boost another player on their heads to get that another player to a higher place. This may be considered as Climb. If it is, then I've just destroyed my prev post, if not, I'll stick to that post :D:D
I first became aaware of cs in early 2005 and not long after that i tried to do some kz maps on lan. And unfortunatly i was never able to finish one, simply beacause the jumps were to hard for me.
2 years ago when i tried some kz maps on an internet server and I simply got addicted to it. then i played like 2 hoers normel cs and 2 hours kz per day but I just could't finish the maps so I gave it up again. 2 months later I wanted to learn the nuke jump and luckily there was a friend of a teammate who could do it so he explained the concept of longjump to me and helped me 2 learn it. after 3 hours on the first evening I was abel to do 229 block and stood the nuke jump every second try. On the next days I geeked kz_longjumps2 like 5 hours per day and was able 2 do 335 block. Around that time I started playing kreedz again and i as able 2 finish more maps then before or made them in better times. But there was every now and then a jump that was simply 2 long so I geeked longjumping again and every time when I was able to beat my record I was really happy. And that never changed( was able 2 make 245 block this week and got 249.7 stats today).
because of what i experienced I say that it is impossible 2 do kz properly without some longjumping skills. So in my opinion deleting the lj section on a kz community site would be unfair to people who are trying to do lj wr's because they train hard for it like every kz map rekordholder does.
Chicken or egg, anyone?
Facts fist:
a) I consider a "LJ" a jump that focuses on reaching maximum distance in a straight line (well, multiple s-shaped, rather), hence any kind of LJ/cj/... blocks. This excludes jumps that intend to elevate you to a higher position or force you to actually change your direction besides the airstrafes we know from LJ blocks or limit you from above (how i hate those >.<).
b) Before one can successfully perform a decent LJ you have to master two things:
1 - A good and smooth prestrafe
2 - Well sync'd and timed strafes in midair
(3 - hit the duck button X_X)
I am not the one who invented LJing/kreedzing/whatever and I did only play the shooting part of CS back when the whole thing actually came up but one thing I dare claiming to be the truth: Before anyone mastered a LJ, this very person first mastered a strafejump.
I still remember my first strafejump which i happened to figure out by accident on ultrablock ("forgot" to hold w :D). It was opening a whole lot of new ways for me. All of a sudden I could jump around corners, breaking the common laws of physics, reaching points i deemed unreachable. I had no clue of LJing back then. Heck I didn't even know or care about it.
Us human beings are majorly built the same way - mentally and physically. So I dare saying, the one who discovered this "new way of jumping" ages ago, not just holding w and hitting the space bar and ctrl a few milliseconds later, must have felt the same way. (Most likely he did not start with a 276,13 pre and 9 strafes 96% sync or a 272 dcj). So someone must have first discovered this way of changing directions while jumping and hence paving the way for the things we all love: Jumping further than 215(?) units and clearing gaps that seemed impossible to pass before; jumping around objectives, giving CounterStrike more depht and a whole new meaning (at least speaking for me). This, imo, is the very essential part of kreedz, not LJing itself.
Don't get me wrong - I like LJing and I want it to be a part of kz and XJ! (Don't ask me to what extent, though)
(Another) Personal-oppinion-part:
As I mentioned before, I haven't been around back then, but I could imagine, that the true intention of the first "maps" (which might not have been kz_ or made-by-kreedz-maps), was utilizing strafejumps and not distance. Celebrating the "breaking of the laws physics", not caring about units or anything, just jumping around corners.
Even today, I don't give a shoot about "units" unless I'm trying to master/find scs, lj as refered in the opening part of my post, or keep on failing certain jumps. I just enjoy floating through the air, giving a damn about the law of inertia and climbing up a map step by step.
[before anyone starts hating: Read MY definition of LJ again. If your definition is different - share it, I might reconsider my wall of text]
Edit1: Nowadays most maps require certain LJ/bhop(which needs extra discussion) skills - hands down. The first ones didn't. All you needed to be able to do was a good and clean strafejump.
Edit2: Another thing I want to add: Being good at LJs doesn't make you a pro in actual climbing. And the other way round.
i think that were there no lj, climb maps would be impos. Still read my last idea in 1st post. Do you rly think ljing doesn't require skills and hard-work? Same as recording it deserves a place. Remember t3dbundy times , bibo, oTcHeTo, how were those times when kz_lj2 was on 80+% servers! Why forgetting about most xtreme part of kz? Because you hell nubs and jelous? Every1 who says that lj is shit ,all these wr holders, they didnt jump even a 254, so why not making top 10 again? Wouldnt be you able to check 10 demos per year?! you check 200+++ wr per year and wouldnt you check 10 lj demos 5 sec long each?!
could you provide a clear definition on what you name a LJ, please? Because imo you have to discern between LJ and strafejump (read my post [again]). To me, it sounds as if you don't, which makes the whole discussion quite complicate.
Plus, you might want reassess your wording. =)
I will not take part of the discussion, I merely wish to state my opinion on this matter:
"Long"jumping will always be the essential of Kreedz. You can be able to jump through a map without using other techniques than "longjumping", while you can't actuelly finish the map, if you cant jump the distance.
I'm not saying that LJing is what makes up KZ, but KZ is the same as LJing. (Prestrafing if need-be ->) Jump -> (Strafing ->) Landing.
If you are not able to do this well anoth to jump the block, you wont finish the map. Other techniques like bhop is something added on to do it faster and more efficiently. AGAIN, THIS IS JUST MY POINT OF VIEW.
Explaination: I started out knowing strafing pretty well, before I knew of bhoping. So later I added bhop to my arsenal, became good at it, and LJing kinda faded - But I started to find myself stuck at surden points, where bhoping would not help. So since my LJing had faded, I found myself stuck, as I said.
Please note, that I originaly KZ'd in CSS.
PS I dont make any sense! D:
PPS All I'm trying to say is that LJing is practicly the fundamental of KZ IMO!
I don't really get the point of the discussion tbh. Back then longjump minimaps were included in kz_ maps for two reasons:
1.) practising and improving your strafing, to finish the map faster or more easily next time.
2.) to compete / show off / find out who jumps the highest blocks.
And that's it. Nothing more to add!!
The real geeking started when numb released his first longjump stats. Now people could actually see what they were doing wrong and work on it. I consider this to be the biggestes step in kz history, because from that point on, maps were rapidly getting harder and the avarage skill exploded to levels noone could imagine before! Ofcause this plugin had a massive inpact on longjumping itself as many guys started to geek longjumps only and forgot about the "mother" of longjumps: kz_ maps.
Please keep in mind that there werent no longjumpstats in the beginning, which is the main reason for creating blocks with different distances. Otherwise we all would have ended up jumping for stats on the ground maybe :D
So what's longjumping today? Like 6 years ago, it still is a good way improve your feeling and skill for multiple strafes in a row. With all plugins and techniques invented so far it can give you a huge advantage at normal kz_maps. Nevertheless you wont beat any kz_map by longjumping - For that, you just have to play the map! :)

I'm afraid you have no idea how time consuming checking a LJ demo is,whereas checking a WR demo takes way less time. And you must see there are just more than LJ WRs being sent in - there's alot of people trying to tie the current wr to take a top 5 spot and so on.
Hey, you can't say that LJ and kz is part of each other (except for the maps with lj blocks ofcourse), because most jumps just require w prestrafe and a few strafes, I mean lj has never been a part of kz you can do hard jumps even without using lj skills. Just look at adantouds demo on kzm_fineblcok, and you'll see.
Oh and I didn't read all the other forumposts, so I'm sorry if i wrote something that has already been said.
But no LJ is not a part of kreedz; kreedz is about techniques not about how far you can jump.
I don't think XJ should removed longjumping, I like it's here and I'm always impressed when I see a new worldrecord. It's part of XJ and shouldn't be removed.
Oh and my attitude towards longjumping? It's boring.
Look at it this way: Kreedzing is like the Olympics and there are disciplines such as LJ, HJ, BHOP LJ, CJ, DCJ etc. So this actually makes LJ a part of KZ. Period. What you are trying to do here is an intellectual differentiation, but it doesn't really work. Fact is, without our beloved and hatred Long Jump, maps like kkz_texture or today's standard TJs wouldn't be possible, and the majority of the community obviously loves to see a hard map or TJ beaten.
I don't get this fucking crying over the LJ issue anyway. I mean, what's the problem? Everybody is saying "it's important to have fun", even the founder of Kreedz said that. Hey! Newsflash: Long Jumping IS fun for certain people! And shouldn't you do that, what makes you have fun?! Stop these redundant discussions and just let the progress of Kreedzing flow.

didn't want to post here my negative view about lj, but you just made me... You call longjumping most extreme part of kz? Oh please, it's the most boring and the geekest part.. Doing one single jump 1562 in a row.. What, jealous? I rather feel sad for them. Also, i don't need those 254 units block to be a good climber. I can easily perform 250 block and i'm very ok with it.
I'll repeat myself, i didn't want hurt someone, just those people like starwars are pissing me off, so i couldn't stay tolerated.
I sense a flamewar in the making :) My thoughts? Well i think people should do what they enjoy doing. And making the lj list longer would mean alot more lj demos which apparently takes a long time to check so i'm not sure it's possible to make the lj list longer.
Well shock I dont talk with narrow-minded ppl anyway so I wont bother you. Peace.
Well, it's ok since i didn't expect more than an insulting from you.
All I wanted say is that LJ is for sure came first and just then came kz/climb, i mean yea kz is nothing without LJ as well. But i think 254+ LJ is way too much and unnecessary for kz nowadays (at least on official maps). You would ask me, what about xtreme maps? The truth is again in that you don't have to jump 254+ to pass it through, you just have to learn the jumps, that's all.
When it comes to recording, i really can't get those people who spend weeks/months on one single jump doing it uncountable number of times just to get a result; some of them are even do the same block many times(i mean performing)... So, compare now longjump to climb/bhop which has much more space, diversity and will(freedom).. The difference is obvious.
Sure everyone do what he like/can to do. You should not impose your views. Peace.
I didnt read anything in this thread, but how can you say LJ started KZ'ing....?
Almost every jump comes from LJ element/technique.
Longjump its just a word or two idk since in spanish are two words lol.
Its just how you look at it. For what ive read, Vee sees it as the combination of (pre strafe + strafes), so jumps where no pre strafe was yet discovered where not longjumps?. I think you starwars sees Ljs as every single jump we made. For what i ve read you said you couldnt accomplish any climb map without ljs, there are maps you dont need to jump more than 200 units of lenght. So whats the minimum distance for a longjump 215? 200 or even 1 single unit? if you know what i mean... I take no sides PEACE
