Calming the nerves
I don't know about you guys, but I'm a very high-strung KZ player. When I'm playing, my hands sweat a lot, I'm doing a lot of radical and haphazard movements and quick bursts of multistrafes. I'm not very smooth.
I think my style gets the job done fine, usually, but my nerves are really ruining my game. When I'm doing a good run (and by my standards, this means "not screwing up") I get nervous, and then when I come across something that requires me to think or use some finesse like a longjump, I usually botch it terribly because my hands are shaky or I'm really nervous. The sweat is the worst of it, though. It's gotten to the point where I can't watch a Kreedz video or demo without sweating in response.
I've been doing runs and geeking for 3 years now, I've had my fair share of miserable falls and chokes, but it's still something I've never gotten past. I'm sure I can be a lot better and more consistent if I calm down a little!
So guys, do you get nervous during your Kreedz sessions? If so, how do you keep them under control? And for those that don't get this sensation, how do approach the game to be able to keep yourself so calm?
i personally dont nervous at all.even if i record wr on 100mins map and fail last jump i wont be rage:D i think i lost that feel since i recorded 12312321 dmeos on cosy.so,you should try it.
well my advice is just to play for fun , u need to think positive and just have fun , not just play to reach somethin , but also practising the map and the game style ;D .
while ur playing put cool music ,chilling, reggae or whatever u feel its calming and play relaxed.
oh and ps : if u mean get nervous on places where its risky and u can fail etc .. thats kind of normal and u have to risk , like rush and feel that u gonna do it , like even if u fail u will go again there and finish map u feel me bro?
;D
Try not to think about this jump. Do it like you are in public server.
smoke some weed and relax
Are you usually, irl a nervous person or get pissed off fast? That might be a problem for it.
When recording a map, try not to geek it hardcore, get to another map and then come back..
(P.S.: get some bottles of water, as you've said in your comment, you need to hydrate yourself a little bit:D)
I am convinced, that kz, much like much else here in life. Gets easier the less you really care.
Sadly, some of the best hardest and most "impressive" things I've done in this game has not triggered the same - if any - reaction from me, as doing 250 lj, for instance.
I think that's why akkord can keep coming back and be good, he strikes me as the kind of guy who really just dont give a shit. Even with his obsessive comments about, how every demo of his gets beaten is "still slow" or "bad".
It's also about reaching new levels, I used to get nervous even when I was recording for kz-sca, but as I got better, and recording became easier, it went away by itself.
But when I attempted to record something that pushed me, in terms of how much finesse and skill was required to take the record, I started getting nervous again.
I can only imagine that it would've gone away - had I kept playing. To me though, it sounds like you just care a little too much. (given that you sweat from just watching kreedz videos).
Anyway, as a temporary solution, you could get a small fan and have it blow cool air on your hand. As nerdy as it would feel, I'm quite certain it would work. Also work on not overthinking, and overcomplicating things. If LJ's are a concern to you, practice longjumping untill it isnt.
I get nervous too, but it's part of the fun. Although I can imagine that sweating of yours being a real nuisance. The fan idea above seems legit.
My hands are sweating too but i think that's because i play too much. Back in the days i was getting too nervous when i was recording.. sometimes i wasn't even breathing because i thought "if i breath , i can do a mistake" .. and the veins on my head were ready to explode... but now i don't give a shit about this game anymore.. and i can tell you that i have beaten all my records in any kind of technique or times. The less you care, the better you get !!!!!!
I disagree with this theory-''You should not care to be good''
If you like to play this game and you care about him.....you play harder and with more passion......wanting to be better,to perfecting your style....
And what if you make mistakes when you play because you're a little nervous/....That means you care about the game....And if you care, you're going to want to be better,to succeed where you have not did before.
All you have to do is play this game and you will become better and better every day.For some it is easier and for others it is more difficult to practice...
It's like real life, some people can play football better than others ;D
Kangoroo, I can tell you this, even though i do 9+ strafes by default even on bhop i never get sweatty, but when i do a run on a map when it comes ot lj/dcj i usually fail 7/10 tries, the way i keep myself calm is by listening to random VEVO songs..
its all about reaching new level like noel said, like me 2011 summer kz_bridge nervous in 4:34 run, now 3:49 and still thinking that i can improve
I had a really perfect run on kz_man_terablock that could be WR but like the last 2 stages I was so nervous like I've never been before LOL. Couldnt even do 1 Bhop...
I believe the thing is you have to turn your brain off and stop thinking. Music may help also.
MUSIC is everything IMO.
Yeah. It's about being positive in both ways, if u fail - if u dont fail.
Why do you even need to think to a hard jump while you are in a run, like plowed said, get a mindcontroller shut it down, chill out.. Do the run with pleasure, if there's a hard jump on a 2min-3mins map at the half of it, stop sticking to it and play it like you'd never knew about it.
(easy to say, hard to make)
NOEL - well said.
Same thing happens to me all the time, Kangaroo. When I reach the end of a map with a decent run I'm always getting nervous, and I just can't help it no matter what I do.. I think there's no way to change that. It's just who you are. You have to accept that you'll be getting nervous everytime and succeed despite of this fact. I've screwed many runs because of this, and so will you. I guess we're just unlucky... Like someone above mentioned, we care too much and there's nothing to do about it. If you're patient enough, after many horrible fails, with time you'll get used to it. You'll be able to control your hands, but that nervousness will never go away completely. But like Kraeft said, it's part of the fun!
Some time ago I asked KeltA if he's getting nervous too, he said he does everytime...
Good thread , you can read some pretty funny stuff here !
Well nervous is pretty big thing for discussion . It's more like who you are , as shnz said . Stuff like this never came out from , maybe but that's not big case . About risky moments , try to don't give shit if you fail . If that made you angry , just quit game and try to don't think about that anymore . It's all about fun , remember ! ;)
Classical music by Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, etc. does the trick when I do cups and play in general.
Well, I've recently found a regularity that's happening to me throughout my recording biography. There are 2 cases that leads me to nervosity.
The first is the most obvious one. When I'm doing a very good run I'm getting more and more nervous on my way to the finish. Closer I am to the finish, the more I am getting nervous. But only in case of a very good run.
Another thing I've noticed is that the more time I spend on recording a single map without succcess will lead you to no-doubt nervosity each time you get a little further the point you usually fail at.
However, I'm able to suppress it in most cases. Can't describe how exactly but I guess you just gather yourself in one, mentally. And another way is ofcourse a lot of experience in recording; you'll just get used to those critical moments.
To add with, like some said before, don't overcare. I know it's hard by times and that's why you need something to distract with. Low music is a good way out too. But it ofcourse depends much on your nervousity structure aswell. But well, as said, for me it all comes down to concentration by getting yourself mentally in one.
All in all, you'll probably never get rid of it. It will just be a weaker effect with the time, but you will however learn how to play with this nervosity and be able to control yourself.
I think when you first start recording you will be nervous all the time, even for me this was the case. I still remember the days when I was recording kz_halicarnassus.. I reached the end, with what I thought was a decent run. My heart was beating extra fast, like it was going to pop out of my chest. I think I was even sweating and to make matters worse I started simultaneously muttering to myself "Don't fuck this up." And then the inevitable happened, I failed and proceeded to fall to my death.
Then if that wasn't bad enough, you have thoughts afterwards of something like "That was WR, and I literally just failed the end.. and I can't give up now" Anyway, that was more or less my first experience with nerves and KZ. I realized after that, that shit happens and you just need to deal with it. Fails are apart of KZ and they will happen at the worst times. Ask anyone and they will tell you my fails are pretty legendary. I've even had people say to me "You just failed the last block, and you didn't type quit in console?" But believe me, when you finally do complete that first WR it changes a lot. First of all you gain some confidence and experience which is huge. I'd say after my 5th XJ WR I have never got that same feeling again while recording.
Something that could speed up the process of gaining experience would be recording for cosy. I've said this before but I truly believe starting out doing fun cosy maps is the way to go. It may not be on the same level of XJ records but it's still a valuable 'tool' for you to use. This way you still get that feel of recording compared to just playing in pubs.
A few tips to close it off..
- You're going to have fails during your runs. The key thing is not to panic and think of ways to make up that time in the jumps ahead. (if possible)
- Sometimes it's just best to laugh it off. (although I need to follow this one a bit better sometimes)
- Try listening to music as others have said. (I'm ALWAYS listening to music when I record. Try to find a balance between your ingame sound and the music)
Anyway I hope this helped at least one person, and realize you aren't alone. Just reading the posts you can see many pros still get nervous despite having played for years and holding many records. (shNz, keltA, I think even koukouz at one point)
Oh and one more quick thing, like NOEL said you will reach new levels after a certain period. This doesn't particularly have any correlation between being nervous or not but you can start doing WRs very quickly depending on the map.
