Cheating
I partially agree with your statements lagster, but I can't see a single solution to the matter atm. Yes, we are dependant on help from eDark right now, but with good reason. He knows best. However, he has taught the demo admins how to deal with several cheats outside of what the anti-cheat programs can do. I personally was baffled when I was introduced to the demochecking rutines. It wasn't the anti-cheat tools that stunned me, but additional cheat-detection done manually. Of course, it's only done manually because it would be horribly challenging to program into an anti-cheat tool.
The bottom line is that eDark knows far more than any demochecker could hope to know without spending weeks or even months studying both cheated and legal demos, however democheckers are given a lot of knowledge on the matter of detecting cheats with tools and without. There is just far too much to learn.
And as it seems most people agree on: we cannot make the tools and methods public for obvious reasons.
Thumbs up for the thread though ;)
Instead of discussing whether or not the current demo-checking system is apt or needs to be changed, whether demo checking tools should be should be public or elite, or any other such futile (precisely cuz hopefully XJ will not change their current policy) discussions, why dont we build anti-cheat systems ourselves ?
There are hundreds of talented coders in this community and various other national kz communities. Why not build up anti-cheats and submit to XJ and get those polished up by edark. Probably, that'd be the best way to make the best use of edark without taxing him much.
Companies like Apple holds competitions for hackers to break through their security so that they can identify the loopholes and rectify their shortcomings. Why doesn't XJ make a similar competition for making anti-cheats or demo checking tools ? Keep a prize money pool. I am pretty sure lots of guys would contribute, making it a pretty huge amount, attracting the full time efforts and dedication from the elite coders of the community.
Just a suggestion :)
I really like seeing people talking shit about something they have no clue about. If you want to catch cheaters in the way eDark does, you've got to learn whole HL1 engine and that's looooooooooooooooooong process buddy, even if people show interes, i doubt eDark got time for that...
Well actually properly learning Goldsource is like getting from c++ to java or other familiar language :) But understanding how the cheats are working needs time.
