FPS/LAG problems megathread
08/12/2018 20:42(edited 17/03/2020 15:38)These fixes are all for the legal version of CS from Steam. Nonsteam is not supported here.
The mandatory:
1. First check if your problems occur in CS only or in other games too. This will help you narrow down the possible causes of the problems you're having.
2. Keep your computer updated and clean of viruses.
3. Simply try reinstalling or verifying game files and see if the problem disappears.
4. Keep the insides of your computer clean and make sure nothing is overheating.
Mouse:
m_rawinput
A feature added in the 2013 updates. This feature takes mouseinput straight from the mouse, bypassing Windows settings. Renders useless the need to use RInput.exe. If you want to use the old-style input, use m_rawinput 0, but using 1 is highly recommended. Default value 1 on Linux and 0 on Windows.
m_customaccel (this is just copy paste)
This is a hard cvar to configure, since it doesn't work in the exact same way as the "enhance pointer precision"-option in windows does.
If you used mouse acceleration before the updates you can try:
m_customaccel 1
m_customaccel_max 0
m_customaccel X (Here take you old windows sens and multiply it by 2. For example before the update I was using 4/10 on windows, so i should set this value to 0.8)
m_customaccel_scale 0.02
sensitivity X (The exact half of your old sensitivity cvar)
If it doesn't feel right, try using different values for the m_customaccel_* commands, eventually you're going to get it close enough.
Few launch options you can try:
-noforcemaccel
Forces the engine to use operating system mouse acceleration.
-noforcemparms
Forces the engine to use operating system mouse parameters.
-noforcemspd
Forces the engine to use operating system mouse speed.
MSL (mouse speed limit)
This is a mouse setting that limits the rotation angle of the mouse. It's easier to reach higher distances with it and it's considered cheating. You can clearly see MSL when watching a demo in slower speed. Only way to get rid of this is buying a mouse that doesn't have it.
Graphics:
These are launch options you can set from the game properties in your steam library.
-nofbo
Forces CS to use the old rendering method prior to 2013 updates. New rendering method includes multi-sample antialiasing.
-nomsaa
If you don't want the antialiasing but still wish to use the new rendering method, use this option.
-stretchaspect
The game by default adds black bars based on your game screen resolution. Use -stretchaspect on your command line if you want the old behavior back (just always fill the screen). Setting "-nofbo" also implies "-stretchaspect".
-freq
Force a specific refresh rate when running in fullscreen AND your monitor supports the frequency in question.
-heapsize
Specifies the amount of heap (or free store - cache, an area of memory used for dynamic memory allocation) the engine will use. Minimum value is 14336(14 MB). Maximum value is 131072 (128 MB). By default this is set to 40960 (40 MB) and automatically adjusted to suit your system. Value must be in kilobytes.
These are console commands you can set in-game or in your config.
gl_vsync
The ability to turn off vsync from the game settings was finally added in the 2013 updates. Strongly recommended to be set to 0 for any kind of kreedz related gameplay.
gl_ansio
Using the value 0 turns off anisotrophic filtering.
Rates:
You can use net_graph 1 to check what happens when you modify these settings.
rate and sv_lan_rate
This is how many bytes per second the server sends to the client. New maximum value of 100000, use it. Many servers might not have their sv_maxrate set to 100000 yet because I feel like not many know about this. So you can be forced to use something lower.
cl_cmdrate
This is data that you send to the server with all of your actions. This can be checked with net_graph, unsent data is shown as red dots in the bottom. Lots of red dots is a bad thing. Recommended value 105.
cl_updaterate
This is the data you receive from the server. Unfortunately the best setting for this depends on the server too. Any good server has their sv_maxupdaterate set to 100, but again you can be forced to use a lower value. Recommended value 100.
cl_nosmooth
This cvar takes away the smoothing effect and shows the correct position of the model. Recommended value 1.

Found many threads about this issue but nobody has found a proper solution yet.
General:
Drive health
Check the health of your drives with different softwares, there's plenty of them you can use for free.
Laptop performance
Set the power settings of your laptop to maximum performance.
Steam community overlay
You can try disabling the steam overlay to see if it has any effect on the performance.

I would add couple of things. Since this is a Steam only guide, I'd say you need atleast a 4 core processor with at least 4 gigs of ram. You can, of course, play the game on dual core (2core 4thread is fine), but if your cpu is 2core,2threads, chances are you will get stutters or fps drops.
Secondly, make sure your graphics card is capable enough. 1GB of GDDR5 128/256 Bit is ALWAYS better than even 4gb 64bit card. Period. If you have very powerful graphics card, make sure your CPU is not bottlenecking it. Example - 1080Ti combined with bad dual core processor.
Also, if you own that much of a powerful card, invest in a very solid 80+ (preferably Gold) efficiency rating. If your PSU is not efficient enough, or is some poor quality cheap that came with your prebuilt pc, chances are it's not powering your GPU at the correct voltage.
Laptop owners, make sure your laptop has a decent mobile cpu and gpu, also make sure the game is running on the correct gpu and not the integrated one. Also, install all necessary drivers.
Make sure you don't have viruses, can't really tell you which antivirus software is the best, since i haven't used one in about 5 years. Chances are, if you are using common sense while browsing, you won't download infected stuff.
Disable all of the animations and effects in windows. Also, uninstall all of the windows10 bloatware.
Make sure you clean your coolers and fans, also make sure your case has good enough flow to blow the hot air out. This is ensured by making sure your front and side fans are blowing air IN and the back+top fans are blowing air OUT. Your rear and top fans should run at a higher RPM to make sure all the hot air is sucked out. If your case has PSU mount on the bottom, make sure the PSU fan is sucking air from the bottom, instead of turning it around with the fan facing the inside of the case.
Cable management is also crucial for air flow, if your pc is a jungle mess of cables, don't expect it to be cooled well. It will most likely overheat, which is the main cause of performance problems in most cases.
Make sure your BIOS settings are all correct, that means: CPU voltage+frequency, RAM timings and voltages (if you use more than one stick of RAM, always use either the same stick or RAM that has 1:1 timing and voltage to your original one, in order to avoid problems),PCIE frequency should be either Auto or 100mhz. Cpu performqnce mode: make sure it's set to Standart instead of Turbo or Extreme.(This is also crucial for overclockers).
Check your HDD for errors using software like HDD Sentinel or Victoria. It your pc has bad sectors, you WILL have stutters or even PC Freezes. You can try and regenerate HDD using Victoria under DOS with a bootable USB.
Speaking of bootable USB, you can also check ur RAM for errors using memtest86+, you can download it and make it bootable usb or you can download Hiren's Boot CD/USB(i recommend this since it has tons of useful tools).
Make sure your HDD mode is set to AHCI instead of IDE if your BIOS supports it. (WARNING!!! THIS WILL MAKE YOUR WINDOWS INSTALLATION UNBOOTABLE AND YOU MUST REINSTALL!!!)
Always make sure to have the most up to date drivers.
For lower end pcs i suggest using the old steam gui by adding -nochatui -nofriendsui to your Steam.exe shortcut or completely disabling Steam Overlay.
Word to overclockers: always make sure your system is 100% stable by testing it, use AIDA64, Intel Burn Test, Prime95. Also, make sure your Motherboard is of good quality allowing overclocking, and your memory being able to OC.

I have a feeling that the CPU consumption of 65% has something to do with it and nothing seem to help that issue
Can you go to task manager, then go to to "processes" and then give me a screenshot?
I have had this problem, but it was fixable by closing something, I can't remember the excact name maybe svchost, but not sure. It was sucking like 60-70 % of the CPU usage. So please give me a ss, so I can see if you have that problem.
If it's that problem you will have to close that tab every time you want to play.

Change HL.exe priority to above normal?
Also, if you're on a laptop, set power consumption to maximum performance.
Disable ingame steam overlay.
If you're using Nvidia graphics, there are many videos on YouTube for adjusting it for 1.6.
Give your system specifications so it'll be easier to figure out the issue.
Inside this file is a README with basic instructions for getting started and base GPU configuration for NVIDIA users. Applies to Win 10 1809 and probably other Win10 Versions.

As a quick overview the script and contents will automatically disable unnecessary services, uninstall windows store apps, uninstall unnecessary windows features, automatically configure mouse settings pointer precision 6/11, disable Ease of Access settings such as sticky keys, mouse keys, toggle keys, set power profile to high performance, disable usb selective suspend, disable gamebar/gamemode, disable all windows 10 features and settings related to privacy.
There are disclaimers in the scripts, and the zip file and contents will be updated as new settings are determined to be necessary. The scripts are human readable so any basic knowledge of powershell will allow you to read an understand what it is doing.
Readme contains other fixes as well that haven't been fully automated.

Another thing you can try is forcing all apps to use the same power profile in Nvidia, Nvidia secretly forces adaptive for per app settings such as steam.exe. Go through all the per-app settings and make sure they use the same power profile, also you can also try enabling or disabling shader cache in nvidia per-app settings.

Might add that unparking your cores can have some value. Unsure of the technical side of it, so im not gonna type some bs i dont really know about. Helped me with another old game.

Some backround,
this is happening on map called slide_downright as you can see my fps drop to around 60 for a brief period of time and only when facing certian direction in this case the front, once i look up, down, anywhere else they jump back to 100.
I tried increasing priority, changing various settings, nothing could solve it so far.
Fun fact: this is only happening on my new pc with modern hardware (ryzen 5 2600, rx 580 8gb), but it didnt happen when i played this map an older pc.
There are few more maps where my fps drops to like 40 and stays like that.
Any ideas ?
