2007-2008 was the time that blew rooftops' popularity to the roof. It kind of split the community to groups where others wanted to keep with oldschool hns and others wanted more with new opportunities that 100aa offered.
It's interesting that when most of the old finnish players sticked with 10aa, most of the old swedish players got into 100aa (maybe because finnish servers were 10aa (hnsfi, SPFI.net) and swedish servers started 100aa (rayish, akpu.se, beer-gaming(?))

I remember walking around at the biggest LAN party in Finland at the time and seeing many pink screens. Those were CT players waiting for the Ts to hide on the zkillz server. I think that was in the summer of 2007, but I could be wrong.
Personally, I think the time period when that server existed was the golden age of HNS. I really liked the aa10 movement and simple, yet deep, mechanics. That's really when people tricking each other, "koijjed" etc. started.
I remember there being a HNS tournament at some point in 2008 or 2009 maybe (Excuse my shitty memory) for which I gathered a team of surprisingly skilled players such as KeltA and jondee. That team was called m0l0 (translates roughly to "d1ck") and we made it our mission to piss off the other teams as much as possible by making huge 4-5 player boosts and blocking enemies so they'd fall to their deaths. It was all good according to the rules at that time, but I guess these days you'd get banned the second you do that. Times change.
We made it pretty far in the tournament, maybe even to the grand final -- until we lost in a nailbiter in de_inferno. That match boiled down to which team was better at doing a certain 3 man boost in T spawn.
Whenever aa100 started becoming more popular, and when people decided that running away or hiding in a hide and seek game mode were kick-worthy offenses, I quit for good.

Not sure how useful this is to you, but I remember reading an interview with Kreedz and he mentioned that even back in 2002-2003 there were HNS maps, I repeat, HNS maps, not the mod itself played on de_ maps. However, I doubt they have any resemblance with the current ones, so if you want to dig in further, you'd need to ask the really, really oldschool players.
Such a nostalgia trip reading this thread.. too bad I never bothered recording any demos to share

That's exactly the tournament! As luck would have it, I have 3 PoV demos saved from that very tournament. Our gameplay might not be what you hope or expect, but it's what we did back in 2010. We also weren't on voice comms, so all our communication happened with the in-game radio commands and team chat, in which we wrote Finnish in a pretty cryptic way although we had Knoxville from Germany as a stand-in.

28/01/2020 22:33Brings back a lot of memories seeing many of these nicknames, 10aa hns was the first thing I started playing after I got bored with regular CS. I spent a lot of time on SPFI with different nicks and pomppulinna sounds familiar too? Didn't realize to save any demos back then which is a shame really. I even made a hns movie back in 2008 which was the first video I uploaded on my channel. Most of those demos were recorded in 2007. Too bad I had to take that movie down from youtube years ago because of copyrights and never saved it anywhere.
