kz_longjumps3/s and the approach in making it.

No such news or forum post have been made to make aware the people of the community that the map is considered.
I for one, have found thru the small line of words in a recent Map release.Although, someone said in discord that it was presented for a bit in a cup stream.

The actions are already done, and do not seek to undone anything, but only of always looking at what can possibly be done from different perspective. So:
-I do not think the ones working on the project would do it wrong. (Even tho i dont know who are the people and their role, i believe hoLy can do good decision and organisation on such thing)
-However i wish to express the fact that i believe a more community-involved way would have been perhaps "better".
-I also feel like there was no attempt to have arms open to anyone wishing to contribute in making this project as best as it can.
-It is the "entire XJ staff"(words of Evis with no other specification) that works on it. I am to wonder why is only the role of a staff member fit for such job.

-A great way to have activity on the site would be to have all type of interactive things. As we have of course with recording, mapping, forum posting, movie making etc.
-If the idea of the project would have been presented and asked for opinion from the entire of our community im sure many would have drop an idea at least of their desire with this maps.

-This imo was a community activity because the map will be (presumably) a map for all type of lj records done by anyone attempting lj records.
-A sticky forum post trying to bring peoples opinion and ideas would besides the fact of increasing activity and interaction between users overall, would also elevate any chance of having this project a success as it would have the chance to accomplish any possible missed wishes by the community within the project.
-Having someone voice their opinions and ideas is a great way to have the community feel together and united, as it accomplishes a project for KZ and the site they visit and like (assuming they like it :-} ).
-Such project that is for everyone to enjoy and use, is something that can bring only positives if everyone feels involved, no matter how little.

I do not have the tools of expression very well to convey the concept of unity and openness in a community, I believe some may have an idea of what i try to say(hopefully).
This is only opinion and perspective. If you feel i have a wrong view of how things work please do discuss, as i would be very appreciative of anyone trying to have conversation in good faith.
If nothing is said, i am glad at least you took the time to read untill here, thank you.

You have a good point that now it's a good time to show the pre-release version to public, so everyone can check the maps and find any mistakes.

Potential FAQ:
Q: Why 2 separate maps?
A: goldsrc engine limitations - allocBlock (basically the maps size) is nearly 100% on both maps, even with texture scaling.
Q: Why the same textures again as in ljs2?
A: The opposite question would be "Why different textures?" They were fine and clean and everyone was already used to them. The textures arent exactly the same, they've been upscaled and color balanced to fit a little bit better than in longjumps2.
Q: Why are the block distances increasing with step of 2, like 240 .. 242 .. ?
A: engine limitations again with allocBlock. Skipping some blocks in the lower range allows the map to fit into the limit.
Q: Can you still record old techniques on longjumps2 after release?
A: Yes. It will be specified in rules.

Nubz moviemaker03/06/2020 17:39

Spider is on point. I remember when fykseN and hoLy hosted XJ podcast and the discussion there was that a competition/collaboration with the community would be held. Also if I remember correct the textures were discussed to be with different theme.

Why different textures? I mean it is pretty clear atleast for me that a new look on the map would of lifted the interest to simply play it. Now it just looks a copy of the old version and the design is from 2008(?). Same way as kz_longjumps and kz_longjumps2 had totally different design. New design would present a new era.

Also as moviemaker it would of been hella fun to edit new clips with a totally different atmosphere since kz_longjumps2 edits are so raped already.

I guess there are more reasons to change the design then not to. The only reason I find for not changing it is either lack of motivation or creativity. No offense for the mappers I believe the structure is perfectly fine and you guys probably worked hard on it, but the design should have been changed obviously and I believe the community would have loved to see other mappers involve it too, like muJik and Qicg for example. Their design is just brilliant.

Hopefully something could still be done.

An entire post was made about new LJ techniques making it into the LJ's tops section quite a while ago -> https://xtreme-jumps.eu/news.php?extend.2623

It was mentioned a few times that a new map will be needed to incorporate said techniques. Considering this fact, I'm not sure why is it so surprising that there will be a kz_longjumps3, unless you didn't see the post itself.

I did not see that p0ker, thank you for posting it.
It is very great what is there and it was a great start esp. the way the community had a chance to come to a "result" of what to choose between the ljs tech.

With this said, me having the state of unawareness while checking the XJ site at least once a day for the past month talks in itself to the fact that it seems nothing came of such a great start that involved the community.
There could have been since that post many opportunities to make(if not another news, i think it should have been one) a sticky in forum to announce XJ taking on such project of making the map and with it, clear to the community players that it is time, and their voice can, and is to be heard now as it is made.
Having no side-banner,no newspost of the map taken to be made by XYZ, no forum post of the progress of this new map with new tech to implement that involves the entirety of our base players.
There was nothing the unaware could ever know and be part into brainstorm and oveall interesting discussion of what this project can be made into if the voice of more people would be heard and discussed, agreed together on and be satisfied, together as a whole.
As i said, having the entire community able if they wanted to,to input even the simple comment of any sort on the subject would be an incredible feeling of beeing part of something more.

Might be childish of me, but having such projects even over the internet to be part of even to just witness them as they are completed, it is of great feeling and memories.
Having stuff like this that seems not to everyone, to me is missed opportunities to create a bond between the ones that partake in discussion, making of it, or just putting an emote or image as reaction to whatever ppl do.

This post did not went absence of notice, thank you for replying to the post guys.

p0ker Tournament #2 VIP03/06/2020 20:16(edited 03/06/2020 20:26)

Well, the LJ poll stayed for a long time on the side-banner of the website (similarly to the feedback poll for the tournament right now). And after some time, we gathered the results we needed, so even that was removed. (the newspost itself was already nearing/close to the second page of the news section by the time we removed the side-banner)

But more importantly, the core idea of this project is not kz_longjumps3, but rather the new techniques making it into the lj section. As I mentioned to you in discord (and now to everyone else) if we wanted to only add bj, scj, acj and ascj then kz_longjumps3 wouldn't be even needed. This is to show you the focus of this project leaning towards the LJ section itself rather than the map.

The map itself serves a function and that is to provide a place for the jumpers to perform the new techniques officially. While at the beginning we did consider a mapping competition, we quickly realized that it is not about the map but about the techniques.

Perhaps things could have gone in another direction, but it is not like only two people were involved with the map (chichin and qicg), the entire xj staff was aware as evis stated before.

I'm personally extremely satisfied with what they have done because it serves the exact function it was made for -> allowing demo recording for the LJ section.

So, it is not like we wouldn't have made a sort of mapping competition about the map if it was about the release of the map itself, it is just that the map here is more of a secondary thing supporting the main idea, which is why we picked the most efficient way of fulfilling this goal.

Either way, other jumpers and other mappers tested the map as well, so it wasn't really a one-sided affair as you may think it was.

Mallee mapper03/06/2020 22:54

I really appreciate reading both sides of the coin here, i also like to know what is still possible due this date for the community with input of ideas.

I am not sure if this is the right topic to forfill my ideas, maybe we can start a new thread if the staff/people working on the map(s) are still open for that

Sunako04/06/2020 02:22(edited 04/06/2020 02:31)

I think both of the maps are pretty bad, especially the longjumps3.

map design is always important, not just the function or how easy to access the room, the teleport and the font itself in longjumps3 doesn't even match the feeling of the texture, I guess people don't want to hear the truth tho, its obviously will be better if u use the new texture but the longjumps2 texture is fine too if u understand the atmosphere in longjumps2, but in this longjumps3 you just take the longjumps2 texture but the level design not even trying to match the feeling of the texture

I also read the q&a, but if the block distances increasing with step of 2, people will obviously stay with ljs2 instead of this map

samps04/06/2020 08:46(edited 04/06/2020 08:47)

Holy shit this looks like prototype version of ljs2 that was made overnight because of pressure. I'd rather see new small map with added techniques instead of this. No hate towards anyone behind this, but seriously, consider the comments here and try to make it more credible

Btw, CJ blocks are too narrow to use different pre angles. Those should be at least the width of previous ones.

For the first part i do not totally agree, you can see it costs time. but the architecture looks a little odd if you compare it with longjumps2, but i do not think it looks bad.

For the quote, that is also said, so i do not know why you are saying that. People are still allowed to use kz_longjumps2 for recording demo's.

Jesus christ, you make sound big news incredibly boring

This could've been a big deal and breath some fresh air into the scene. An open competition for everyone to bring in their ideas and creativity. This stupid map has been talked about FOR YEARS and everyone was looking forward to it, but instead you decided to work something out behind closed doors without involving the community. I wonder how much the mappers were influenced by the admins, well the results and your post speak for itself at least. ChinChin's maps are nice but they're just a continuation of kz_longjumps2 like someone else said.

Personally, I liked the different colors on kz_longjumps2 since that map had a pretty flat atmosphere already.
Did you remove the respawn on the bhop/duck bhop blocks on purpose?

Nubz moviemaker04/06/2020 12:50

Wouldn’t it be still possible to start a mapping competition for kz_longjumps3? Using the version in this topic to be a base for it and to be one of the participants.

For example you could start the competition with a certain deadline and specific rules like what the map has to offer and what it can’t have:
-techniques
-units
-structure
-etc.

After the competition meets deadline, the community would be able to vote for the version they prefer. I mean they are the ones to play it after all, right?

The map with most votes would get tested and get perfected for the official release.

Just an idea.

I don't see why a competition is per se necessary. Just because kz_longjumps2 was a competition, doesn't mean you need one right now..

As spider1 stated, this map only purpose is to serve the community and no community eye was laid on it.. so thats pretty strange. feels like making a car like Ford does, instead of using the Toyota way.

kalinskY04/06/2020 17:47(edited 04/06/2020 17:48)

the start of tha map,is a huge step back from ljs2... i mean its so narrow and closed and it looks outdated. Those simple rectangle teleports to the rooms are simply ugly. The missing random architecture in ljs2 before you enter any room was a great feature, you could upscale that by adding some combos to train from the unperfected maps(like the kz part from goldbhop),but still keeping the textures from ljs3. The actual rooms and the lighting are awesome !

perd0 mapper04/06/2020 20:36(edited 04/06/2020 20:53)

I was too bit upset when I saw the news that kz_longjumps3 is already worked on.
I firmly believed XJ would held a mapping competition for this map, as there was one for kz_ljs2 in the past, and it was a big success at the time. From the number of maps getting released these days we can clearly see there still are many active mappers and I believe it would become a successful competition again.
I don't know if prize is the issue, but to be frank I was personally thinking of contributing financially towards the project, and I'm sure there would be more of us.

I'm not saying it will be a bad map once it's out (I haven't played it or seen it yet), but an official longjump map is basically 'once in looooooooooong while (meaning over a decade) thing,' and I'm sure more people would love to have a chance to get their teeth stuck into it.

// Okay, I have just played it as I noticed download link has been posted here.
Is this for real? Are we getting the same map after a decade of waiting for a brand new kz_longjumps3?

To be fair I should not care as I don't record longjumps and will barely play it, but come on :D we can do better.

zythH^ moviemaker04/06/2020 21:27

At this point all I can do is feel bad for how people are treating Chichin and qicg's work.

perd0 mapper04/06/2020 21:38(edited 04/06/2020 21:41)

You get it wrong. This has nothing to do with their work or their personas. This is all about the decision taken on how kz_ljs3 was approached, which quite frank is bit upsetting. Anyways, it doesn't bug me THAT much, so I'm done commenting >D

This forum thread isn't about Chichin, Evis, Holy, the kz_longjumps3 or kz_longjumps3_slides map

this forum is about bussiness operations and the approval of an institution made map approved by the same institution. people who still try to address how they think the situation of the named above topics are should make a new thread and try to give constructive feedback in that thread.

I personally think that the staff shouldn't be surprised about the warm emapthic feeling people have with this community and willingness of helping out one another. And that the fear of missing out on such great topic really will struck a nerve.

zver04/06/2020 22:17(edited 04/06/2020 22:22)

while im not a mapper and dont know the limitations (of size for ex) ill still say some things.

as a kz player and since longjumps is a symbol map for the kz community imo, i think when u start a project like that u need to raise awarness and ask literally everyone for ideas, of jumps, textures etc.

the texture would need to be pretty similar to longjumps2 imo since it is easy on the eye, doesnt distract you and is also easy to see from where to where you have to perform your jump

for jumps i would have them from 1 to 1(250-251-252 etc) especially on the higher units, since performing a new wr or a personal record even for just one unit is already a major achivement, 2 units is sometimes too much.

i would also have a lot of techniques like, cj after jump, strafe jumping, strafe after bhopping. other slide techniques(note that those i could have not describe well since im dont have the terms but hopefully you understand what im saying) like bhopping after slide, sliding as high as u can(as that slide from mk_illuma), sliding as long as u can, steepsliding as long as u can, steepsliding as high a u can.

note: im sorry if i offend anyone or you dont really understand what im talking about since im not really that 'pro' or so deep into the kz world, but a player that now had some time to dive into kz(due to pandemic and w/e) and would be willing to learn some new techniques and test some limits to know my runs that would've what i wanted the most

i just stated, this should be addressed in a different thread/topic. we aren't talking about the actual map.
