I didn't say you have to talk to every member in this community. If someone sends his application, you should just talk to him, because as you said, you don't hire admins that can't be trusted.. but you can't know if someone is trustworthy without knowing him. I don't think you would prefer that every member in this community would try to make friends with you in case of becoming an admin.. and that sounds kinda lame too.
So, choose yourself. Accept your friends only or learn to know people that want to help this community.

ndR moviemaker Tournament #214/05/2010 19:58

As I previously said, I'm always looking for "happy medium", something which satisfies everybody, it's the hardest thing to find but I think it's always worth it (at least trying).

You are talking to me as if I was the only admin out there. I am not head admin, I don't take any decision alone, I just shared some of my personal thoughts and explained a bit of the method the XJ admins work with in the background.

I never said I wanted every member to become my friend, I just enumerated the ways people had to contact me, those people who want to be admins.
I must guess that nobody wants to be admin, I didn't receive any PM about this except one.

Things are working this way on XJ and will never change (unless you kill the whole staff and take the website over ;)).

I prefer to end this discussion since this is endless and in the end senseless. I let the thread opened if people want to keep talking about this topic.

faker mapper14/05/2010 20:08(edited 15/05/2010 02:22)

remake: You are a bit naive aren't you? Also you didn't really understand a word in what ndR tryed to say, did you?

Knowing people doesn't mean to be in personal and private contact, "knowing" people means to know some backgrounds and see what people are about. It's possible to "know" people by their contributions to the community and/or posts they made, when they give an insight into their maturity and ability to express themselves, how they treat other people etc.

As a mater of fact no half-way serious community would trust people blindly.

And for the matter of demo-releases, sure, thopa did a hell of work there, but there were mistakes as well (people that didnt use a cheat got accidently banned for cheating) or cheated/invalid demos were accepted and had to be fixed afterwards. Don't wanna talk bad-mouthed about his work, but sometimes quantity is NOT the most important thing.

And don't forget... nowadays there are 100 nasty ways of cheating and stuff that needs to be checked, causing demo-releasing to be way more time-consuming. Stuff was easier back at that time. Also it's really hard to teach new admins how to check all that nasty stuff properly, so u cant just recruit a guy and see how he does... and then start it all over again... you really have to be sure you can rely on that particular person before you teach him all the stuff (takes kinda ages).

remake14/05/2010 20:24(edited 14/05/2010 20:31)

EDIT: Alright, I agree with ndR to end this discussion now.

puppetz mapper15/05/2010 01:00

remake, do you really just discuss with people because you seek attention, and not because you actually have something to complain about? Now I've read your argument here and I still don't get what your problem is with the way XJ recruits new admins?

And now you just suddenly agree?

...

TlofT15/05/2010 01:37

faker, i started kz around this time last year; of the first newsposts i remember was thopa being banned. since then i've really stuck around the kz community. so what new cheats are around? seems like not much changes in a year on an 11 year old game

jw.

faker mapper15/05/2010 02:27(edited 15/05/2010 03:00)

Well, actually thopa wasn't banned at any time, he got kicked out of the staff, that's right, but no ban (he had a warning tho).

About the cheats... No demand to be 100% correct, but the first bhop hack that was "undetectable" (with the normal fps-death admin readings) was found after thopa's era and needs some further and special checking. Futhermore nasty stuff like engine altering plugins such as sidespeed, changing only a few digits, and other forms of slowmo (we/eDark [that's a really hard thing to do, even for admins who know how to do it] can detect like 5 different ways of slowing down the game atm) were invented as well.

It's obvious that I have something to complain about LOL, you probably didn't read my posts even. If you don't understand my (more like your) problem then why are you joining this discussion with your senseless post? And you obviously didn't read ndR posts either because I agreed with his suggestion to end this discussion.

I'm out.

EDIT: And yes, I'm seeking attention by discussing things. I think most of the community is interested in discussions and therefore I could get lots of attention.
PS, did you post here to get some attention?

3T15/05/2010 11:20

ndR is a good admin.

I remember that Supa ever applied for a admin?

puppetz mapper15/05/2010 11:29

Yes, I read your posts, and it looks like ndR is talking to a wall. You keep mentioning things he never said like

So just because someone is famous, he also can be trusted? I don't even want to think what would happen if kkz would be an admin in here lol..

Where on earth did that come from? After that ndR even tried to defend that, as if that was what he said, but he actually didn't? Every time ndR comes up with an argument, you say the opposite, and don't listen to him at all. If he mentioned how he really liked bunnies, you would have said that bunnies sucks and that all admins on XJ does too, even though that has nothing to do with the discussion.
This is why I don't think you really have anything to complain about, you seem to just want to argue about everything, without even coming up with any good arguments yourself = attention seeker.

Finally, if you really have something to complain about, I still don't get what you want us to do? Do you want us to gamble and pick a random user ID and tell him to become admin, because then he's probably not famous or our friend (at least we didn't intend to pick our "famous friends")?
How does it not make sense to pick some admins that we know from before? This doesn't have to be because they are "famous" or because they are our friends, but if they are, I only see that as a good thing. After all, if they are our real friends, they won't just do what we tell them, they will also come with constructive criticism for our work.

Take me for an example. I got picked as a mapadmin over a year ago. I wasn't really friends with any of the admins, but I assume that I got chosen because I had a map in the database that XJ liked and because of my previous activity in the (map)forums. I think that's a really fair foundation to pick an admin on.

Ovidiu Dumitru15/05/2010 13:32

remake I know that you are upset that we didnt choose you to be a new cup admin. You can blame me for that, seriously. You know that I like talking to you but sometimes I don't understand you. I mean I do understand where you're coming from, but I don't understand why you have to think like that. I would say "trust me" when I'm telling you this, but then I don't know if I should ask you to trust me. If you think you know me for a lot of time and you know that I'm fair and I'm not lying, you can trust me. Nobody and I mean NOBODY in the staff recruits new admins based on "that guy really loves me, lets get him in" or "we know each other, bring him in". No, it's not like this. But sure, if we know the guy, we have a certain advantage when we decide to offer him an admin position. It's good to know a bit the person who you want before getting him in, but this isn't the main criteria.

You (all) should also consider yourselves very lucky that you have these admins. I don't know how many admins from other big and serious communities would even talk/post to his members. I mean, do you see bds (sk gaming) talking ? Have you seen Jason Lake (manager of complexity, soon to be ex) ? Angel Munoz (president of ex CPL) ? Probably you will not understand why do I compare them with us or with faker, because we didn't reach their level yet. It's true, we didn't. It's just that we think that we are heading in that direction. For this we work. We all want to see KZ much more than what it is now. In my eyes, faker is a great CEO. We have a strictly professional relationship. You can't say that I'm a close friend with him. He does his job very well. He/we (the staff) always think at you (the members of the community) before making a decision. We work with him and we do a great job together.
ndR is damn right when he says that "The other communities' members don't complain because they're not used to give their opinion about any way the website chooses to follow". That's simply because those who run the community or whatever they are running, don't talk with the members like we do and they aren't even interested in hearing their opinions. In XJ is different because everybody knows everybody. Probably this is the biggest mistake. Don't get me wrong. I like talking with people, A LOT. But sometime I guess it's not that good.

And if we are recruiting new admins without making applications or things like that, it's because we think this is the best way to do it. But it DOESN'T mean that we are picking those who "love" us or who are close to us. Everyone and anyone has a shoot. It strictly depends on you.

The bottom line is that you (all) shouldn't be offended or upset or to take things personally. Every admin in the staff works for this community, to make it a better place. No one is acting in such a way that it could offend people.

I don't even know if I should have said these things, but consider this a transparency of what we are doing.

ahh i see. i had thought slowmo was always around in one form or another. but yes i know he wasnt "banned" but it seemed as if he was shunned from the community, so to speak

Acelamb16/05/2010 18:37

The way that the staff recruits admins works in a way that members of the staff, or possibly other users, suggest a person they believe would be a good addition to the team or that a user applies. If an application is sent, we will post it in the admin forum, review the application and learn his/her background and his/her present. There will then be a vote within the admin forums, and I can confidently say that we do not judge without knowledge, but that does not mean we only accept friends or known players.

An applicant with experiences is obviously often chosen above others, but we do appreciate any application.

@TlofT
The time we had with thopa were good yes, as he had good knowledge on demochecking and probably a schedule so that he would create releases frequently. Now with the new demoadmins, they need to learn what thopa had spent so much time to learn, actually slightly more, and adding to that they have exams/work. I can tell you as a witness that advanced demochecking is far from easy. How eDark discovered all these demochecking techniques is amazing, I have not yet understood how to check demos properly (slowmotion detection, advanced bhop-scripts etc.), but I am attempting to learn so that I may some day assist TinTin and ndR. Even with the tutorial eDark created, I am still left in confusion, so I will need to learn by experimenting.

It just seems like nearly every Admin up there on XJ is so tired off his work and does everything only with boredom and hate. So the thing I don't get, why don't you really recrute for new Admins? When I sent faker an application I got ignored until I wrote to him on IRC. All I got back from him was: "We are already working on someone, sry."

I'm not attacking faker now, it's just like: Admins say something happens, but in fact I think nothing does.

Ofcourse the new league is a great invention, but still, why are there leagues and cups and stuff like that, if there are only 2 semi-active (it seems like semi-active) Demo Admins?

Sorry if im failing but isn't XJ mainly focused on investigating Who is the best on a map and not on who is the most luckiest guy in a period of 5 minutes on a random map?

It's just weird

ndR moviemaker Tournament #216/05/2010 23:09(edited 16/05/2010 23:11)

Hmmmm...
Have I ever said I was tired of my work or neither showed it? Never, and the only few times it happened the only person who knew about was faker.
I'm sorry if you guys got accustomed of "50 demos releases" every days on national communities or cosy-climbing, but it doesn't work like that in XJ.

You really seem to forget that the checking process in XJ and other communities is not the same.
It's not as if we were just watching the demos in-game, launching FPS-Death, "ok no cheat" and then "hop" : release.

Semi-active?
Come on...
I'm on the website everyday, I spend several hours everyday taking care of it and other side-projects, and I am inactive?
What is your definition of "active"?
A release every 2 days? I could do it, but the only effect it would have is that it would totally hide the others news.

We have to wait before posting the news, because just imagine 5 seconds...
faker posts a contest newspost tomorrow at 2pm.
I release the demos at 5pm.

Who will take a look at the previous newspost?
Nobody, or almost.

"Admins say something happens, but in fact I think nothing does."

We don't say that this thing or that thing is happening, we say that we are working on things.
We spend a lot of time on these side-projects, while taking care of the regular XJ activities.
We do not want to ask non-admin people to help us to finish these projects faster because we have always been dissapointed in the past, non-admins always gave up or never completely finished the work they had offered their help for.

I guess you can understand why today, we prefer to take care of the side-projects ourselves, even if it's slower, at least we are sure it will be finished someday.

You cannot know what is happenning in the background, you only see the "bright side", the frontpage and the public forum.

First, you say that you are always looking for active, motivated, fresh guys to let them help you,

then you say you prefer doing projects on yourselves and that you won't let anyone having a closer look on these "side-projects".

Ofcourse I know that checking demos is also known as sitting in front of the PC for hours.

So why don't you "split" this high amount of hours up on 3-4 people instead of 2?

Yeah, you said that you've been dissapointed but you and I and almost everyone knows that there are at least 25 people which are intrested and motivated in doing a job like this.

I really can't believe that there are people who find it interesting to have demoreleases to be the only thing to keep XJ from hitting the ground.

Your comparison with who is the best on a map and who is the best in a cup doesn't make sense to me. In cups you can see who really has skills, who is the most "all-round", who can play well on almost every map they enter, and who can climb under pressure. As for demos, it's more like "who can geek the most", isn't it? As for record demos, I would actually say that it's more like "who is the best in a period of 5 minutes".

Well, I (and if I say I, I really mean me, and not the community) am not interested in this cup-idea.

Ofcourse it's cool if you take part on it, but imo its just boring to read who won where... I just think that more people are intrested in seeing WRs than in seeing that zhady won 5:0 vs M@ugli. And the demos themselves are really boring to watch imo, aren't they?

Ok, it's probably because people like different things.

But your whole comment was answering one single argument in my whole complaination (I don't know if this word exists)
